Williamsport man allegedly assaulted 4-year-old child
Joseph Winfield, 42, of 2500 Federal Ave., apartment 276, has been jailed on high bail for brutally assaulting a 4-year-old child on two occasions in his apartment, city police alleged in an affidavit filed at the office of District Judge Christian Frey. As the child screamed and cried, Winfield first struck him and then proceeded to punch him seven times last Christmas Eve, police alleged. The other assault took place on July 29 when Winfield came out of a bedroom and struck the child “in the side of the head hard enough that the child and the highchair he was sitting in tipped over and hit the floor with a thud,” it was alleged in the court document. While the child was holding his head and crying, Winfield grabbed a hold of the chair and aggressively put it back upright, police said. Both assaults were recorded on a home security camera, police said.
Charged with two felony counts each of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child plus two misdemeanor counts of simple assault and one count of recklessly endangering another person, Windfield, who has since waived his preliminary hearing, remains jailed in lieu of $150,000 bail.
