A Lower Mahanoy Township, Northumberland County man was killed when his Subaru Forester was struck by a train shortly after 12:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon, state police said in a press release.

Darwin Whitmer, 74, of Dalmatia, was attempting to enter through a railroad crossing at Railroad and Spruce streets in Herndon Borough, at 12:40 p.m. when it was struck by a Norfolk Southern Train.

Whitmer was not wearing his seat belt, and sustained fatal injuries in the crash, the release said.
