Confrontation with state police lands Loyalsock Township man behind bars
Joseph Michael Smith, 57, who state police said has been struggling with some mental health issues, ended up in the Lycoming County Prison Saturday after he shoved a state trooper into a door and out of a bedroom inside Smith’s home at 948 Northway Road Extension in Loyalsock Township.
During the 7:40 a.m. incident, the trooper had to deploy his taser gun.
Before the confrontation, the trooper was going to transport Smith to a hospital to be evaluated, police said. Initially, Smith had been walking in the middle of the street, police said. The trooper and Smith went into the house to talk, police added. Department policy required that Smith be handcuffed for the ride, and that is when he suddenly “attacked” the trooper, it was alleged in an affidavit.
Family members told police that they “took a knife from him the previous day because he was threatening to kill himself,” the court document stated. It was also alleged that Smith stated he would “kill the trooper” once he was released, police said.
Following his arraignment hours later before District Judge Aaron Biichle on charges of aggravated and simple assault, terroristic threats, resisting arrest and harassment, Smith was jailed in lieu of $75,000 bail.
