Memorial event to be held at Yasui Peace Tower in Williamsport

The Christian Social Concerns Committee of the United Churches of Lycoming County will host an event at the Yasui Peace Tower at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, to mark the Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, bombings of 1945. The tower, at the corner of Pine Street and Little League Boulevard in the city, was commissioned by Dr. Robert S. Yasui in the mid-1980s, according to a press release from UCLC. He hoped it would provide a place of mediation for the community, the release said. The plaque on the tower reads, “Dedicated...to the humanity that makes us all one.”

Church celebrates 120 years

Carsontown Community Church, 7951 Little Pine Creek Road, Waterville, is celebrating its 120th anniversary on Sunday, Aug. 1, with a 9:30 a.m. service. The service will include a hymn sing as well as a chance for people to share remembrances. Fellowship, refreshments and a memorabilia display will follow. Attendees are encouraged to bring along photos, articles or other church memories.
