Search for South Side resident ends
Nearly seven weeks after his disappearance, the body of 33-year-old Matthew Stoner, of South Williamsport, was found Thursday morning in the Susquehanna River, nearly 90 miles from home, according to city police.
A fisherman spotted a body in the water about 10 feet from the shore in Middle Paxton Township, near Harrisburg, about 10 a.m., police said.
City police Agent Raymond O. Kontz III, the lead investigator in the case, said investigators quickly determined the body was that of Stoner, who was last seen on video approaching the Market Street bridge just before 1 a.m. on Feb. 7.
Kontz said he believed the cause of death will be ruled accidental and that all indications appeared that Stoner likely fell from the bridge and that his body was carried down stream by the heavy current.
“It’s a tragic outcome, but I sincerely hope this will help his family bring closure,” Kontz said.
Stoner had been the focus of a number of searches in the region after he left a local bar, which he had left and then was denied re-entry, Kontz said police were told.
Two weeks after his disappearance, more than 100 people, including emergency responders and dozens of friends, spent an entire day looking for him.
“There is no indication of foul play,” Kontz said Thursday night, adding there were no plans for an autopsy.
It is believed Stoner died of injuries from the fall and possibly drowning, Kontz said.
Stoner’s body was found six days after the body of Michelle Inch was discovered in a creek near Monroeton in Bradford County.
As in the Stoner case, dozens of Inch’s friends had participated in a number of searches for the woman, who disappeared in late January, two weeks before her 32nd birthday.
Inch died of “blood loss secondary to a gunshot wound to the right arm,” according to the Bradford County coroner. The woman also suffered “blunt force trauma injuries and multiple stab wounds,” the coroner said. No one has been charged with her homicide. Inch’s funeral is scheduled for April 2 at her church, Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church on Broad Street in Montoursville.
