Discount department store plans location on Lycoming Mall Circle
Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, one of the largest retailers of closeout merchandise and excess inventory nationwide, is opening a branch in the former Toys ‘R’ Us building in Pennsdale, confirmed Gwen Pidcoe, Muncy Township office manager.
The outlet bought the building during the toy store’s bankruptcy process and is now seeking employees via online ads.
“It means more jobs in the area; one more store added, where we’ve been losing quite a bit,” Pidcoe said. “It is a big deal for us.”
Attempts to reach an Ollie’s representative were unsuccessful as of press time.
Pidcoe said she has not yet had contact with Ollie’s corporate office and doesn’t know whether the store will offer furniture, as some branches do, how many jobs the store will bring to the area or what its affects on the local economy may be.
That said, she does expect Ollie’s to appeal to
community members.
The closest Ollie’s location now is Mill Hall, just outside of Lock Haven. That branch offers deals on items such as; toiletries, housewares, small appliances, kitchen accessories and furniture.
Ollie’s sells branded merchandise at a lower price by buying overstocked or old-packaged items.
“You will always find famous, brand name products at Ollie’s, but a lot of them could be last year’s colors, patterns or packaging that traditional retailers won’t sell,” according to the website.
Nearby, Bonner Sports and RV, of Jersey Shore, plans to open another location March 1 in the former Pondscapes building near Bastian Tire and Auto Center off Kristi Road.
“I’m hoping that does well,” Pidcoe said.
