Plan to widen sidewalks, move water, sewer lines has $5.8 million pricetag
Contractors began removing trees Tuesday from alongside West Fourth Street in Newberry between Route 15 and Arch Street.
The project will widen sidewalks to five feet to make them compliant with the American with Disabilities Act, Heidi Lozano, project manager with the state Department of Transportation told Newberry residents at a public meeting in late January.
“From the city’s standpoint, once the project is over we’re willing to go in and look to see if there are spaces we can put trees,” Adam Winder, director of the city streets department, said at the late January meeting.
Wolyniec Construction, Inc. is the prime contractor on this $5.8 million project, which also includes relocating water, sewer and storm water lines, according to a news release from PennDOT. The project also will include similar work between Oliver Street and Hillside Avenue.
