Area churches limit services, activities

Churches in the area are curtailing activities and services to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

All churches in the Upper Susquehanna Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America have been advised to suspend all worship, gatherings and meetings.

St. Mark’s Lutheran, Williamsport, has suspended all worship services, ministries and meetings through April 4; services at Messiah Lutheran, South Williamsport, are cancelled this week and Redeemer Lutheran, Williamsport, and St. Luke’s Lutheran, Williamsport, have cancelled services until further notice.

Under a directive from the Diocese of Scranton, Catholic churches in the area have suspended Masses and public gatherings in all diocesan parishes, worship sites, college campuses, chapels and health care facilities.

Churches will remain open daily for individual private prayer; churches’ pastors or parish life coordinators will determine what times churches are open. Scheduled sacramental celebrations such as weddings, baptisms and funerals will be permitted but attendance will be limited to immediate family members and will follow any guidelines established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The sacraments of the Anointing of the Sick and Reconciliation also will be available, when requested individually and in cases of serious need.

The Bishop of the Episcopal Church has called for the suspension of all in-person public worship for the denomination. Area churches affected by this are: Christ and Trinity Episcopal churches in Williamsport and Church of Our Savior, Montoursville.

The following churches have changed their schedules due to the Covid-19 pandemic:
