Longstanding city auditing firm gone

A long-time auditing firm for the city is no longer performing the annual fiscal service.

Baker Tilly, a firm conducting several years of audits, including those done in a prior administration and during years when Mayor Derek Slaughter was on City Council, no longer is doing the work for the city, the Sun-Gazette has learned.

“Yes, it is true that we received a letter from Baker Tilly saying they have disengaged from completing our audits,” Slaughter said Thursday. “Currently, we do not have a firm to complete the city audits.”

The auditing process is the responsibility of the city controller.

The controller is expected to put out a request for proposals for auditing services.

Former city employee, William E. Nichols Jr., was dismissed as city finance director and general manager of River Valley Transit in early January 2020.

Slaughter has not said why and has not replaced Nichols with a full-time finance director, although the position is posted.

Starting at $3.90/week.
