City mulls selling City Hall

The City of Williamsport and administration of Mayor Derek Slaughter today announced that it was requesting realtors to tour City Hall for the possibility of selling the building.

A formal request for proposals for realtor services has been submitted for advertisement.

Sealed proposals from interested real estate brokers will be received electronically via PennBid, said Jon Sander, city engineer.

Building walk-through dates for interested brokers are shown in the PennBid for tours of the building at 245 W. Fourth St.

The building has been condemned since September because of heavy water damage in July rain due to an unrepaired leak in the roof and then while it was closed a heating coil broke in December spilling hot water on several floors.

Estimated costs to bring the building up to code and make it fully accessible were placed at $6 million and higher, as much as $20 million.

Slaughter had employees vacate the building for their health and safety as well as that of the public. The city administration is located in several safe and secure buildings that are in different locations.

An accessible ramp was added to the front of the building as part of a federal consent agreement forged in U.S. Middle District Court last March.

The ramp construction cost about $164,000. No further work needs to be done on the building while it remains closed, according to Joseph Gerardi, city codes administrator.

Starting at $2.99/week.
