Grant funding for fish habitat, coroner equipment passed along

A Plunketts Creek fish habitat, veterans’ graves and first-responder training were addressed by Lycoming County commissioners at their most recent meeting.

The commissioners voted to award an $81,000 bid to CUZ Excavating to improve fish habitat.

“This is 100% grant funded,” Mya Toon, county finance director, said.

Commissioners also voted to purchase a CT scanner for the Lycoming County coroner’s office for $210,500, which is also covered by a grant and to approve an agreement with attorney Lauren Appolonia. The agreement is for legal services for custody terminations.

Commissioners voted to spend $16,891 on U.S. flags for veterans’ graves.

“We have 133 cemeteries and burial plots throughout the county,” Mike McMunn, county veterans affairs director, said.

Todd Winder of the West Branch Firemens’ Association addressed the commissioners.

“We appreciate that you found funding for us,” Winder said.

Winder still has concerns, however, that the group is less sustainable without a dedicated budget item every year.

The organization maintains training facilities and leads training courses for firefighters and emergency medical personnel.

“Without it, we can’t do our job,” Winder said. “This county is blessed, truly blessed, to have volunteers.”

“We know each one of those firefighters are the heart and soul of their communities,” Commissioner Scott Metzger said.

Commissioners approved hiring eight people for a variety of roles, including at the 911 center, corrections and landfill, among other departments. Wages range from $13.55 an hour to $21.05 an hour. The commissioners’ next meeting will be at 10 a.m., JUne 12 in their board room at 33 W. Third St.

Starting at $2.99/week.
