Sullivan County Job Corps center to close

A Job Corps center in a neighboring county is among over 100 that will be closed by the end of June due to cuts proposed by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, the U.S. Department of Labor announced Thursday.

The Red Rock Job Corps Center at 1623 state Route 487 in Sullivan County will be subject to a “phased pause in operations” that will take effect at Job Corps centers nationwide by June 30, according to Wilkes-Barre-based newspaper the Citizens’ Voice.

“Job Corps was created to help young adults build a pathway to a better life through education, training, and community,” Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer said in a statement quoted by the Citizens’ Voice. “However, a startling number of serious incident reports and our in-depth fiscal analysis reveal the program is no longer achieving the intended outcomes that students deserve. We remain committed to ensuring all participants are supported through this transition and connected with the resources they need to succeed as we evaluate the program’s possibilities.”

According to a fact sheet provided by the department, the Red Rock facility operates a 60-acre campus with about 240 students training in fields that include automotive and machine repair, construction and business and finance.

Starting at $2.99/week.
