“Boy, that felt good,” 10-year-old Connor Segraves, of Loyalsock Township, said to his grandmother, Carole Steiger, after he played songs on the piano and sang for seniors at an area nursing home last Christmas.
He also asked her if he would have to wait until the next holiday season to perform at the homes again.
Not wanting to wait until Christmas, Segraves took his show on the road this summer, visiting area senior living facilities and bringing smiles to the residents with his musical talents.
“They enjoy it so much, they don’t see many other people because some people don’t get visited a lot,” shared Segraves.
“He loves music,” said Carole Steiger, Segrave’s grandmother and piano coach.

“The main thing, me and grandma, is to have fun,” said Segraves, with a smile.
Fun has not been in short supply this summer for the duo, having visited four nursing homes to perform.
Connor had one of his last concerts for the summer recently at The Williamsport Home, where he played patriotic and western songs on the piano and trumpet for an eager crowd of seniors.
The patriotic songs he played on the piano included, “America the Beautiful” and the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
Segraves also handed a small American flag to each resident, asking them to wave it as he sang and played, which brought smiles to the faces of the seniors as they sang along.

“We were going to do it in July and that’s the 4th of July,” said Segraves about his song choices.
He has been playing the piano for two years and recently picked up the trumpet in the last year.
Steiger also acts as Segraves’ MC, introducing the songs as Segraves plays.
“He has been working really hard,” said Steiger of her grandson learning all the songs.
“He is not scared of being up there,” said Janis Lowe, a resident of The Williamsport Home of the ten-year-old’s ease in front of the crowd.
The visit to The Williamsport Home also provided Segraves with the opportunity to play a beautiful baby grand piano for the first time.
“Usually I play like a normal or electric, I guess,” he shared.
Segraves also took the time to introduce himself and shake hands with every resident in the audience, something he did without prompting from his grandmother.
“The first one this year was at Hillside, and I’m watching this boy go around and shake hands with these people and I’m like, “oh that’s so nice,'” said a proud Steiger.
The pair also plan to return to visiting the nursing homes at Christmas time and Conner is already working on his holiday music.
“A little sneak peek to Christmastime is that one of the songs that we’re probably gonna be playing is ‘Grandma got run over by a reindeer,'” said Segraves with a smile.
“I always say to him, ‘what’s the word of the day? ‘It’s fun, we want to give these people fun,” said Steiger.
“I feel accomplished,” he said of the feeling he gets when he sees the happy faces of the audience.
“He is just learning to give, to give back,” said Steiger.
