City workers get ready for parade
The City of Williamsport Streets and Parks Department of Public Works has been preparing for a secure and clean 19th Grand Slam Parade and host city.
In terms of safety along the parade route, there are 400 additional metal cattle fence sections ready to go up and cover both sides of the parade route on West Fourth Street, said Josh Aikey, department assistant director.
The department is adding water-filled barriers and vehicles on the parade route to ensure safety, he said. These barriers and vehicles positioned at key side entry streets and points prevent any unwanted vehicles from entering.
The fence keeps the crowd, estimated to be as many as 40,000, especially young children from entering West Fourth Street.
Those handing out snack packages or candy can hand it safely over the fence or toss it over the fence.
In terms of sprucing up, the city public works personnel have trimmed tree limbs along the parade route so floats can pass safely without entanglements from low lying branches.
Public spaces have been mowed, trimmed, and cleaned by the use of a street sweeper and leaf blowers.
There always is a strong law enforcement presence offering seen and unseen protection to the 40,000 spectators and parade participants.
