Man approved as volunteer football coach at Warrior Run despite some opposition

TURBOTVILLE — The Warrior Run School Board at its recent meeting voted 5-4 to approve Scott Shaffer as a volunteer, despite opposition by members in the audience.

Two district residents asked the board to vote against the approval, according to Sunbury-based newspaper the Daily Item.

“Public records that I have from the Pa. Dept. of Education clearly show that Scott Shaffer’s teaching certificate and employment eligibility were revoked in 2020. He was thus prohibited from being employed in any educational setting,” one resident said, according to the Daily Item.

The state Professional Standards and Practices Commission, in 2020, granted the state Department of Education’s request to revoke Shaffer’s teaching certificate. The Education Department’s request cited arrests for misconduct with students and DUI, which the department deemed professional misconduct.

“I would never jeopardize our school’s sports programs or our kids if I weren’t 100% certain,” Warrior Run football coach Derrick Zechman said, according to the Daily Item. “I base my decision on facts. Not accusations. Not allegations. My reference for Mr. Shaffer is that he would help me as a consultant. He would work with me directly on Friday nights in the press box. He is an asset to the team and the football program.”

Zechman told the school board Shaffer has undergone a full FBI background check and was not charged with any of the allegations, and said Shaffer has been slandered on social media, the Daily Item reported.

Voting in favor were Aaron Milheim, Jennifer Rempe, Linda Shupp, Daniel Truckenmiller and Jennifer Meule. Voting no were J. Lyons, Gail Foreman, Robert Hormell and Miranda Bailey.

Starting at $2.99/week.
