‘Vinyl to viral’: LIVE UNITED in Music V kicks off next week

LIVE UNITED in Music V: “Vinyl to Viral,” will be presented by the United Way of North Central Pennsylvania at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 8, at the Journey Bank Community Arts Center.

Celebrating the power of music from timeless vinyl classics to today’s viral hits, this fifth edition of the region’s community concert experience is once again presented by UPMC.

“LIVE UNITED in Music is a true reflection of what community means in North Central Pennsylvania,” said Ron Frick, President of the United Way of North Central Pennsylvania. “From the stage to the audience, it’s about people coming together through the universal language of music–united for a greater cause.”

Since debuting in 2019, the benefit concert has been bringing together world-class musicians, local artists, and an engaged community in support of United Way’s mission.Over the last four years, it has netted over $200,000, funds that will be used to support programs in Lycoming, Tioga, and Sullivan Counties.

Proceeds from Vinyl to Viral benefit United Way’s programs and network of community partners focused on youth opportunity, healthy communities, financial stability, and community resiliency.

“The event not only showcases the exceptional musical talent found in our region but also amplifies the collective power of giving back,” Frick said.

To put it in perspective, Frick explained that the total of two program grants-Sojourner Truth Ministries at around $35,000 and the American Rescue Workers’ Saving Grace Shelter at $70,000 — would be funded for two years with that amount.

Program grants in Sullivan and Tioga County are much smaller so profits from the event would fund those programs much longer, some up to eight years.

“Sojourner is the easiest one to talk about, because they know that it costs them a buck or two to serve a lunch to somebody every single day. If you take as an example the $200,000 over four years, it’s 100,000 meals,” he said.

And the need is increasing with more people seeking assistance from partner agencies as well as the United Way.

“I get four or five calls a day asking for food assistance, asking for rental assistance, asking for utility assistance. What’s happening is people are making decisions. They’re going to decide if they need medication, they’re going to decide they need to eat and then they’re not going to pay their rent,” he said.

The event truly represents talent in the community as most scheduled performers have filtered through the area at some point in their lives.

Brennan “Beane” Hepler is a Williamsport native who is now a national recording artist; Singer-songwriter Dylan Rockoff, also from Williamsport, has built an impressive career performing across the country; Mallory Scoppa Gardner, a Williamsport native and longtime local educator, has been performing for more than a decade as part of the folk duo Whiskey Sunday with her partner John Shively; and Nicole Miele, a classically trained vocalist and versatile performer,
