Where to find food assistance in Lycoming County
Food pantries offering nutritional staples ranging from produce to cereal and non-perishable items are available in Lycoming County.
Multiple locations are listed as part of the network of agencies that receive supplies and work closely with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.
They are listed with dates, times and contact numbers on the food bank’s website in the “Find Food” feature, said Zach Zook, chief strategy officer at the food bank in Harrisburg. The food bank has a hub distribution facility on Wahoo Drive in Williamsport.
The “Find Food” feature is expected to see heavier use now that the federal food benefits for income-eligible people come to a halt on Saturday. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will not be available as the federal government shutdown in Congress lingers, affecting families with children and elderly on fixed-incomes.
A check of the Find Food feature in Lycoming County shows the most food pantries are available in the City of Williamsport, but there are those that work with dozens of churches and organizations in other communities such as Jersey Shore, Montoursville, Loyalsock Township, and Hughesville, for example.
The good news throughout the county is agencies that partner with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and area grocery stores are in many communities, so those who live there can find resources such as emergency meals and supplies. Often, long lines of cars can be seen at these distribution locations. One pastor who operates a pantry in Jersey Shore told the Sun-Gazette the need went up from 250 to 300 households, so the increase is being felt. It comes at a time before the holidays, winter weather setting in, and when the food bank is getting fewer federal allocations, depending on the kindness of donors and contributions from corporations.
With the shut down not ending unless Congress takes steps through Saturday, the food bank listed the following places that are expected to see increased use and with the times of food distribution on the “Find Food” feature.
