3 tenants displaced by apartment building fire in Hughesville
HUGHESVILLE – Three people were displaced after a fire Thursday night damaged two apartments in a three-unit apartment building at 150-152-156 N. Main St., according to borough Fire Chief Daniel Dorman. Volunteer firefighters from the borough, Picture Rocks and Muncy Area advanced hoses into the structure through the front and back doors, and had most of the fire knocked down very quickly.
No one was injured in the fire that the sole tenant in the first-floor apartment at 150 reported about 8 p.m. Everyone was already out of the building when firefighters began arriving, Dorman said, adding that there “was fire in a back wall” on the 150 side and “there was smoke coming out from under the eaves.”
Due to the size of the structure, additional equipment and manpower were dispatched from other communities, including Pennsdale, Lairdsville, Montgomery, Montoursville and South Williamsport. Some fire apparatus not needed at the scene were assigned to man the firehouse on South Railroad Street in case other emergencies arose.
Besides the tenant in 150, a couple living in apartment 152 was also displaced, Dorman said. However, seven people who live in the 156 apartment were able to return to their unit, he added. While the owner of the building had fire insurance, it was unknown if the three displaced tenants had renters’ insurance, the chief said. The identities of those impacted by the fire were not released.
A state police fire marshal responded to the scene Friday morning. While the cause of the fire will remain undetermined, there appeared to be nothing suspicious about it, Dorman said. He estimated damage to be at least $75,000.
