Classes in aerial arts offered in Montoursville

Dance on Air is inviting people to hang out — in hoops, trapeze and silks.

Located at 244 Grey Fox Drive, Montoursville, students of all ages and ability levels are welcomed to learn aerial arts, handbalancing, flexibility and other whimsical, circus-inspired skills.

Owner Amber Bogdanowicz started silks and hoops classes in her garage in Watsontown in 2022.

“Dance On Air is a school with small beginnings that has turned into a whole community of aerialists in rural Pennsylvania,” Bogdanowicz said. “Our students are children and adults that don’t fit into other sports yet still love a physical and mental challenge.”

Bogdanowicz grew up in the business, following in the footsteps of her father who owns an acrobatic studio in Berwick, said Janine Repella, general manager and silks instructor.

While the company had humble beginnings, soon it was necessary to secure a larger spot, so Bogdanowicz moved it to The Shoe Factory in Milton, before outgrowing that location too and moving to a warehouse near the edge of Montoursville and Muncy.

“It’s in a good spot in between both places,” Repella said. “Being able to be in a bigger space and just having more people means she’s been able to hire me and one other hire, Laurel (trapeze instructor). … We’ve been here since the beginning. It’s been fun to see the business grow and now be involved.”

All of the instructors are fully certified, she said.

Bogdanowicz still teaches hoops, silks, trapeze, balancing and hand stands, but now they are also able to host birthday parties, girls night out, group events, workshops with special guests and soon pilates and yoga, Repella said.

“We’re trying to get a better outreach to the community around us and partner with other fitness places,” she said. “We want to utilize the space and connect with the community around us.”

Their location has been open for about a year.

“We’re just trying to get established and let people know we’re here,” Repella said.

Classes are usually held on weeknights, typically Monday through Thursdays. Saturdays are open gyms for enrolled students. To get the latest class information, she suggested visiting their website — which they are currently revamping — and Facebook.

“We try to post lots of content so people can see what we’re doing and see what we’re about,” Repella said.

They offer hoops, flexibility and hand balancing for adults, but the team sees more interest with children.

Their youngest pupils are in the circus peanuts class, which runs for 45 minutes one day a week and is open to potty-trained kids up to age three. They play, receive instruction, work on social skills and practice on silks.

At ages 6 and up they advance depending on maturity levels and how well they follow instruction. Boys and girls are both welcomed to participate, but it tends to appeal more to girls in the area, Repella said.

There is currently no beginning hoop class for children, but if a child wants to try it, the instructors work on building up their strength and then giving them a chance to test it out.

A new semester just started in December, but they have open enrollment, she said.

“Poeple can trial a class anytime,” Repella said. “Right now we have lots of spots that we can fill for silk and trapeze and even adult classes.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
