Area representatives talk State of the Union address

Federal lawmakers serving Williamsport and the region weighed in on President Donald J. Trump’s State of the Union speech, offering their perspectives on what transpired along with promises he made moving ahead.

Three Republicans and a Democrat chimed in after the speech. They were U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser, R-Dallas; U.S. Rep. Glenn GT Thompson, R-Howard; U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick, R-Pittsburgh, and U.S. Sen. John Fetterman, D-Braddock.

Meuser, whose district includes parts of eastern Lycoming County, and who recently visited Williamsport at the annual Lincoln Day Dinner for the Lycoming County GOP Committee, reacted to the State of the Union address with a statement. In it, Meuser referenced tax cuts, crime rates dropping and lower prescription drug prices — calling them “wins for the American people.”

In a statement, McCormick observed the importance of Trump’s emphasis on bringing $92 billion to Pennsylvania in energy infrastructure, AI, and workforce development; while Thompson stressed how Americans were better off now than under the former Biden Administration, and Fetterman, who shook Trump’s hand at the Joint Session of Congress before the president took the podium, told national television news audiences how upset he was by the behavior of some of his fellow Democrats, some of whom shouted and some who refused to stand for certain guests, including the Team USA Men’s Hockey that won gold medals in the Winter Olympics in Milan.

Working families are benefiting

“The Working Families Tax Cuts, signed last Independence Day, delivered relief from financial burdens inflicted on the American people by the previous administration,” Meuser said in a statement.

“The President also invited Americans positively impacted by his economic policies to witness the Address firsthand, including Pennsylvania native Megan Hemhouser,” he said.

“Megan homeschools her children by day and works as a waitress by night, while her husband works overtime as a heavy machine operator.

“Thanks to the Working Families Tax Cuts, their family is keeping roughly $5,000 more in take-home pay each year through provisions like ‘No Tax on Tips’ and ‘No Tax on Overtime’. Megan and her family will also benefit from an increased Child Tax Credit, included in the WFTC.”

“President Trump and House Republicans are advancing a housing agenda to increase supply and expand access to homeownership,” Meuser remarked.

“Crime is down. Peace through strength has been restored. Prescription drug prices are falling thanks to the President’s policies,” he said.

Prescription drug prices are falling thanks to the President’s policies. And Trump Accounts are giving every newborn a financial head start, he said.

“The President showed Americans a future of financial freedom that doesn’t rely on their government,” Meuser observed. “He laid out how we will continue building on the momentum we created in 2025. That includes being responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars by eliminating waste, abuse, and fraud,” he said.

“Under the Biden Administration, Americans endured four years of inflation that hit a 40-year high, gas prices that exceeded $4 a gallon for nearly his entire presidency, rampant fraud across government as seen in Minnesota, and mortgage rates that peaked at 8.5%.,” Meuser said.

“Today, under President Trump, inflation has fallen to 2.4%, the price of gas averages $2.98 per gallon, and the 30-year fixed mortgage rate has dropped below 6%.”

“Under President Trump’s steady leadership and with a Republican majority in Congress, the wind is finally at our backs. We are advancing pro-growth policies, unleashing American energy, strengthening domestic manufacturing, supporting small businesses, incentivizing capital investment, and making sure hardworking Americans keep more of what they earn,” Meuser added.

“The President’s policy points were grounded in common sense, focused squarely on strengthening public safety and national security. He called on Members of Congress to stand behind those priorities and the American people, yet nearly every Democrat refused. The only one who broke ranks and applauded these policies was Fetterman.”

“President Trump reaffirmed the strength of our great country. From securing our borders, to passing sweeping tax reforms for all Americans, the President has delivered on his promises.” Thompson said in a statement.

McCormick, meanwhile, reacted to the State of the Union address stating that the president is delivering on his campaign promises, noting that Pennsylvania has secured $92 billion in new investments with the president’s support.

“POTUS is delivering on the promises he made: peace through strength on the world stage, secure borders, safer communities, historic deregulation and tax relief, falling inflation, and greater economic opportunity,” McCormick said.

“Pennsylvania is already seeing the results,” he said. The U.S. Steel-Nippon deal is strengthening American steel manufacturing and protecting good-paying jobs, he added.

“And the Working Families Tax Cuts Act is now law, with benefits already being felt by hardworking families across our Commonwealth and the nation. The bottom line: the president is keeping his word. There has been lots of progress, but there’s still more work to do. I’m proud to stand with him and continue delivering real, meaningful results for the people of Pennsylvania,” McCormick said.

“Yes, I shook his hand, of course,” Fetterman said. “He walked in, and I’m always going to do that, for sure.”

“It’s disappointing, honestly,” Fetterman said. “I mean, I think that’s sad that half of my colleagues didn’t show up.”
