Muncy School District mulls food service management
The Muncy School Board at its most recent meeting considered the hiring of a food service management company and discussed upcoming building and infrastructure improvements.
In his presentation to the board, Jim Morissey, of The Nutrition Group, outlined his firm’s goals and offerings.
A key component, he said, is to provide good food items and increase the number of students and staff who buy cafeteria food.
He said Nutrition Group manages the food services of numerous school districts including, East Lycoming, Montoursville, Jersey Shore, and Montgomery.
Muncy does not presently contract with a management organization for its cafeteria operations.
Morissey assured the board that Nutrition Group, if hired by the district, would likely retain many of the existing cafeteria employees.
(Business Manager) Andrew Seese reported to the board the various painting, cleaning, and repair work will likely get under way in the district summer.
Among the more pressing projects are refinishing the old gymnasium floor at the high school and seal coating of a parking area at the elementary school.
The gymnasium, he noted, continues to be used for athletic activities.
Seese said the estimated cost of the gym floor work would be $35,000.
“It’s something that has been put off,” he said.
Seese also asked the board to consider installing LED lighting throughout the high school and elementary school buildings.
“We have done some re-lamping,” he said. “Fluorescent lighting is the majority of lighting at the two schools now.”
He noted that installation of LED lighting at the high school alone could cost into “the six figures.”
The board met in an executive session following the meeting to consider legal and personnel matters.
The next board meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16 at the high school’s library/media center.
