US Forest Service to shut down city office
The U.S. Forest Service is relocating its headquarters across the country, leading to the closure of four facilities in Pennsylvania, including Williamsport.
According to reporting by WGAL-TV, a Lancaster-based television station, the Trump administration is moving the service’s headquarters from Washington, D.C., to Salt Lake City, Utah, and will transition to a more state-based organizational model.
Research and development facilities in York, Irvine, Long Pond and Williamsport will close.
“For an agency whose lands, partners, and operational challenges are overwhelmingly concentrated in the West, the shift represents a structural reset and a common-sense approach to improve mission delivery,” a statement on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s website said.
The U.S. Forest Service operates under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
“This is about building a Forest Service that is nimble, efficient, effective and closer to the forests and communities it serves,” said Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz, according to the USDA website. “Effective stewardship and active management are achieved on the ground, where forests and communities are found — not just behind a desk in the capital.”
