Where are the Christians?

The largest block of supporters of the autocrat in the White House are white evangelical Christians, but their belief system and actions seem to be in direct opposition to what Jesus requires of His followers. We, as Christians, are exhorted to act always with love, to recognize everyone as brothers and sisters, and to treat everyone the way we want to be treated; fairly, with love, respect, and acceptance. We are sent into the world to feed the hungry, comfort the sick, house the homeless, welcome the stranger, and love our neighbors as ourselves.

Instead, these rogue Christians blindly follow a mean-spirited, self-absorbed narcissist who lacks empathy and humanity. They accept without question his dismantling of vital programs that support the neediest among us. They cheer him on as he violates the Constitution, usurps Congress’s power to legislate and control the purse, ignores the courts, and uses his power to enrich his own financial portfolio.

And now he has illegally taken over Washington DC and, as he did with the immigrants, is demonizing the homeless, making their poverty a crime and promising to send them far away so they can become someone’s problem, even as his policies and programs have made it harder for the average person to have access to the basic necessities of shelter, food, health care, and education. He does not solve problems, he exacerbates them with his refusal to see, support and expand on solutions, his ‘us versus them’ mentality, and his lack of planning and considering the consequences of his actions.

We do not need to turn this country into a theocracy, which, by the way, the Constitution forbids with Article 1 forbidding the establishment of a national religion. We need people of faith to step up and start living their faith with action instead of empty platitudes.
