Common sense

I read with interest your October 18, 2026 article on page C6 by Pastor Donald Gaffney, “Pastor works to facilitate dialogue about gun violence.” I can only ask the pastor, “What is the rest of his plan to prevent gun violence?” How does he contemplate preventing future Sandy Hook school shootings? I was surprised to read the pastor has a license to carry concealed gun permit. Does he carry in his church to protect his flock? Far too many “Common Sense Gun Controls” proposed by well-meaning folks merely impose more gun controls on honest gun owners. We have laws against ...

Tyranny is here

This letter is in response to “It’s up to all of us” in Wednesday’s paper and “Freedom or tyranny” in today’s paper. Both letter writers are repeating the unsubstantiated name-calling and ‘alternative facts’ of their clueless leader and his mindless minions. Let me start by saying I don’t buy the ‘party line’ of either party. I do my best to research individual candidates to find out what they actually intend and hope to accomplish if elected. This gets harder to do as both parties spend most of their resources diverting attention from issues they have no ...

A congressman who delivers

Central Pennsylvanians are worried about prices for everyday needs, affordable health care, an unjustified war, quality education, and a corrupt administration. Representative Glenn GT Thompson did nothing in his last term to show he understands Central Pennsylvanians’ concerns, and his re-election campaign makes clear he won’t change. When Thompson was asked about the district’s most pressing issues, he cited his “great legislative success” restoring whole and 2% milk in schools and added a vague statement about the need for a long-term farm bill. He said nothing about ...

Confessions of a Republican

I have been a Republican since Barry Goldwater’s faltering 1964 run. I was 13. They said if you voted for Goldwater, the war in Vietnam would escalate. “They” were right. My leanings were strange, considering my mom and dad were FDR Democrats who had grown up during the Depression. My older brother voted for the first time in the ’64 election and convinced me that Goldwater was the right guy. I was following my parents’ lead as an LBJ supporter. I can’t exactly recall his argument, but the conversion had something to do with me egging him on about his political views during ...

Look at Thompson’s record

Glenn Thompson talks a good game. His self-promotion, however, far exceeds his performance. Take health care. In a recent newsletter, Thompson celebrated his bipartisan legislation to expand veterans’ access to mammograms. An important pursuit, certainly. But why did he feature it under “Bad News”? This constituent would rather hear what he’s doing to address the real bad news: inflation, high gas prices, hospital closures and the Iran war. I applaud efforts to improve health care. But one promising initiative hardly compensates for Thompson’s votes to make health care ...

Candidate understands region

Central Pennsylvanians deserve a representative who has their needs and interests at heart. Glenn (GT) Thompson isn’t it. Thompson’s actions have hurt constituents. His failure to oppose tariffs contributed to inflation. His support of the Iran war helped drive up gas and diesel prices. His votes threatened food benefits and health insurance for hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians. He knows he’s not representing constituents because he hides from us. No town halls in nine years. Refusing, as in the past, to participate in debates. Ignoring voters’ correspondence. Ray ...
