Undeniable benefits

Sean O’Leary’s recent op-ed (The Illusion of Marcellus Shale gas’ economic benefit) conjures up the old adage from Ronald Reagan: it’s not that he’s wrong, it’s just that he knows so much that just isn’t true. Respectfully, residents of Lycoming County do not need a think tank – with a significant number of their ‘researchers’ based out of Seattle, Washington – telling them whether they have seen tangible benefits from natural gas development. We can see – and judge – with our own eyes. It is also important to acknowledge what the Ohio River Valley Institute ...

The consequences of Iran

I don’t understand why Trump administration officials, and Republicans in general, cannot explain the consequences of Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons. The current talking point seems to be “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon”, which fails utterly as an explanation of why. The reason is simple. If the current Iranian regime achieves a nuclear weapon, they will use it -- believing that their god has ordered them to destroy both Israel and the United States, and also believing that they will be supernaturally protected from any reprisal. The only potential delay in Iran’s ...

Access to airlines

I took the plane from our airport to Dullas and returned last summer. Being disabled I found getting into the plane challenging. All the people were very accommodating, and I enjoyed flying low so I could make out familiar landmarks on the way. Dullas Apport would have been a challenge were it not for the wonderful wheelchair attendant who navigated the complex route. On previous trips I have used the State College Airport which has flights at more convenient times and serves more destinations. The challenge is there is no convenient public transportation to get there. I hope with the ...

The case for debate

Televised campaign debates have a rough reputation in the United States for very good reason. The format doesn’t allow for significant clashes of ideas. The candidates are often over-coached and rely on their stump speeches more than their God-given rhetorical abilities. And the topics are rarely exciting enough to engage the audience. With this said, the art of rhetoric and the debate as a format are still alive, even if the television tried to hide them. They are asking Dan Meuser and Rachel Wallace to answer the call. I ask for a slice of your time to make this case in three ...
