Today Williamsport Streets and Parks paved Westfall Place and Vallamont Lane. They did a great job. Kept us informed as to when they were going to do it and about parking. Answered questions I had as they were working and were informative. I am happy it was done. It will probably make it easier for them come plowing time. I left them know we appreciated the work. If you have a 911 emergency, whether it be police, fire, or medical, how long should it take for a response? 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15? I’m sure it varies depending on location and nature of the emergency. What if a water main breaks? One hour and 20 minutes? That’s exactly what happened this past Sunday when a main burst on Vallamont Drive. I’m sure most people, myself included, would find 80 minutes totally unacceptable. But gee, it was a Sunday. The 6.1-mile “safety corridor” on Route 220 will never become part of Interstate 99, with roads, streets and driveways connecting directly to the highway. Plus, there is a low-hanging railroad bridge near the beginning of the corridor. Plus, the teacup handle turn-arounds present a potential safety hazard when some drivers ignore the stop signs and no U-turn signs who don’t stop and make illegal U-turns. I appreciate Mark Mussina’s leadership and stewardship of public funds during the County Commissioner’s meeting on September 25. We need more of this. By challenging the assertion that there was “no price increase” on an incremental $12,346 of expense for the coroner’s building, he set the example that such change orders will be scrutinized even if they are covered by an allowance fund. I have been an alumna of Penn State for 52 years. I have frequently spoken out with concerns for the management of this University and I do so again. No one should be writing about the destruction of WPSU. This venerable institution has provided truthful, unbiased reporting for decades. WPSU is, in fact, the only forum where I can find reporting that I trust outside of specific print media.
