A loss we can’t afford

Once again politicians in Washington are pushing to privatize the United States Postal Service (USPS), undermining one of America’s oldest and most trusted institutions. Privatization may sound efficient on paper, but the reality would be far more damaging to millions of Americans who rely on affordable, universal mail service. First, privatizing the USPS would likely lead to higher prices and reduced service, particularly in rural and low-income communities. A glimmer of hope

As I drove through Market Square on June 14, I felt a glimmer of hope as I saw a large group of people gathered there. If that many people could be there to protest on a rainy Saturday in a heavily Republican county, we might still have a chance. Thanks to all of the people who stood in the rain to represent not just themselves but also all of us unable to be there. And an extra thanks to the folks who cared enough to organize the event. CPB about more than entertainment

A recent letter to the editor in the Sun-Gazette criticized my letter defending PBS and NPR. The writer seems to think my letter was only about a desire that taxpayers fund my entertainment. While it is true that my letter begins with a nostalgic overview of programs my husband and I enjoyed on PBS over the years, most of the letter was devoted to the ways PBS and NPR are important to all viewers and listeners, especially in rural areas, and the ways in which people will suffer from the loss of this important source of information. Marijuana and workplace safety

Claims that regulating in the adult-use cannabis market in Pennsylvania will endanger workplace safety and productivity are pure fear-mongering (Editorial, “Debate on marijuana needs to be its own merits,” June 11). First, most safety-sensitive employees — such as commercially licensed drivers — are governed by federal drug testing regulations. As a result, changes in the state-level status of cannabis cannot alter these policies.
