The candy jar

The Trump administration is busy on so many fronts that it is hard to focus on a single issue or even a few related issues. This is especially true with the “Great Big Beautiful Bill,” 1,000 pages long containing numerous unrelated provisions. Hopefully, the Senate will find the courage to stop this bill from moving forward in its current form. Already, some forty government agencies have been shuttered or reduced and tens of thousands employees laid off and their lives upended. These agencies were created out of an established need, staffed by people with specific areas of ...

The real criminal

Why are we arresting the immigrants? If there wasn’t work in America, they wouldn’t be coming here! The ones that we should be going after are the people who are hiring them! After 911 where I worked at an effort was made to make sure everybody was legal by having us bring our birth certificate to prove that we were born in the United States or passports or visas whatever you had to prove that you were legal. And that’s all we have to do now instead of sending out the national guard or the military. It was also said if there weren’t a demand for illegal drugs in the US there ...

Pay your own way

A recent letter writer lamented that the Trump administration was looking to defund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Her sole reason for opposing this seemed to be that she and her husband love to watch PBS and listen to NPR. Aside from the appalling lack of mental acuity that suggests, I don’t see what that has to do with anything. There are lots of things people enjoy that the government isn’t expected to pay for. It seems the height of greed or arrogance to think I should pay for your wants. There are many reasons that the government should not be paying for ...

Salladasburg Elementary is history

Salladasburg PTO has made this past year over and beyond, to top the chart for giving from their hearts ... to the students and staff. The shirts were given to us all with words: “Salladasburg Elementary. More than just a school” on the front. “Closing a chapter. Cherishing the memories” on the back. A huge heartfelt thank you if money was given from individuals to make this possible for us all to have the shirts. I have seven years of memories to cherish from our community’s beloved school as a two-hour employee. Two days before the last day of school, I had a tour of Avis ...

Not ‘just sayin’

About once a month a contributor graces us with a letter from Salina, Kansas. His letters usually contain two kinds of statements: 1) unsupported negative characterizations of everything associated with the Democratic Party and 2) over-the-top, groundless praise for all things Trumpian. He always gets a pass. For example, one letter gratuitously affirms the following with no explanation or proof: “One of the Democrats’ main goals is to destroy the Constitution, via enacting laws that weaken the document. They are the enemy of the people. And again: “The media has printed and ...

Not the villain

The recent silence from former President Donald Trump regarding Ukraine’s bold drone strikes on Russian airfields is yet another indication of his alignment with Russia in this ongoing conflict. While Ukraine fights for its survival against an unprovoked invasion, Trump and many in his MAGA base continue to frame Ukraine as the aggressor—an assertion that defies both logic and historical fact. Russia initiated this war with the expectation of a swift victory, aiming to annex the remainder of Ukraine. Ukraine did not invade Russia; rather, it has been forced into a defensive ...
