American plumbing

Every home owner owns any number of water sources: kitchen faucet, bathroom faucets, toilets, showers, tubs, laundry tubs, outside spigots. One little drip can seem an insignificant drop, but dripping day after day all day long for years adds up. And if not just one source but every source is dripping, the result is a flood down the drain and a deluge of expense, and all for nothing. That’s Washington. We’re told that a few million here, a half billion there, forty billion somewhere else as for USAID isn’t significant. Of course that’s true when compared with the immensely ...

Lies

It is well-documented that Trump routinely fills his public statements with not just exaggerations but outright fabrications. As during his first term, Trump continues to spread false claims at a frequency and scale unmatched by any other elected official in Washington. While Democrats have also been guilty of lies and misinformation, it does not compare to the relentless distortion Trump perpetuates. What remains deeply troubling — and frankly incomprehensible — is why so many continue to support this behavior. History may offer some perspective. Adolf Hitler, notorious for ...

Goodbye, Hiawatha

When I moved to Williamsport in 2005, one of the first community-based activities I did was to ride the Hiawatha Riverboat. After that initial ride, I was hooked. As someone that has always loved the water and boats, this was a perfect way to spend a summer evening. The following year I soon found myself attending wing nights and other specialty cruises with friends. When out-of-town family came to visit, I was always sure to take them on the Hiawatha. At that time, it was a cost-friendly way to give my guests a taste of our unique community. Unfortunately, those days are gone. Over ...

Not the same America

Just to comment on the editorial piece presented Wed, May 7, 2025 — it was good that someone wrote about the dismal schools in this area and other parts of Pennsylvania that do not really teach civics, American History or even World History as I was taught years ago. There are young people today worldwide that think the Holocaust never happened. History is rarely taught in schools today because many people think America is evil because of slavery in the past. Slavery is still going on in the world today through sex trafficking in our country and around the world with men, women, and ...

Take a breath, Pennsylvania

As the furor grows around AI, cryptocurrency, and their rapidly proliferating data centers, Pennsylvania is looking like the kid on the playground, waving his hand frantically out of a desperate desire to get a spot on the team. A high degree of uncertainty exists regarding AI’s energy demands. Remember when a single computer filled an entire room at IBM? Now we wear computers on our wrists. The recent announcement that China has produced a model (called DeepSeek) that outperforms Open AI, which is smaller and more efficient, with lower energy requirements, calls into question many ...

Serving the interests of all residents

I am a township resident since 2017 and read with interest the letter to the editor from Thomas G. Schaech on our upcoming election for Township Supervisor of Muncy Township. He was negative and accusatory of mismanagement of the current supervisor so I felt obligated to investigate his accusations for accuracy. Of note is that Mr. Schaech was a township supervisor however did not get re-elected 4 years ago. It is true that we had a tax increase in 2023 of 0.5 mil taking us to 2.5 mils to provide us all our services. Of note this was only the 3rd increase in 25 years, with the previous ...
