The abyss is calling

A rose is a rose by any other name. But that doesn’t hold true for a lie. A lie is a lie. Consider these lies. 1) Trump won the 2020 election 2) Climate Change is a hoax 3) Common vaccines are linked to autism 4) Haitian Immigrants are eating our cats. 5) Ukraine started the war with Russia These are lies. If we start calling them by different names, maybe ones not as caustic or upsetting to some, then we run into trouble. Because then we start shrugging them off as “poking fun,” or “politician speak,” or “Trump being Trump,” or “Trump speaking from his ...

Opinions undermining liberty

To clarify one point of my letter in the May 14 Sun-Gazette: the judiciary only renders opinions, if opinions usurp Constitutional power of either of the other two branches, or protections of the people; those must be ignored! The belief the Supreme Court of the United States and Supreme Court of Pennsylvania are the arbiters of constitutionality is ludicrous. This is NOT what our Founders spilled blood to birth! Each branch has its’ defined powers; nothing more; nothing less! Madison v Marbury 1803 has been bastardized (Chief Justice, Marshall - the court has no power of ...

Eat the tariffs?

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon recently announced that the Trump tariffs would force the company to raise prices on American customers – starting as soon as this month and continuing into the summer. The President’s response? He told Walmart (in ALL CAPS) to “EAT THE TARIFFS.” For months, Trump told Americans that foreign manufacturers, not American consumers, would pay the cost of the tariffs. Business leaders, economists, and basic arithmetic flashed red light warnings, but the President stuck to his story. We now know that he was wrong. Horribly, painfully wrong. Other ...

Save PBS and NPR

Do you remember the PBS shows your kids watched or the ones you yourself enjoyed? When my son was growing up, PBS shows were his favorites – Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, Sesame Street, Captain Kangaroo, and later The Electric Company. My husband and I never missed Wall Street Week with Louis Rukeyser or The PBS News Hour. We watched Julia Childs and Masterpiece Theater classics like “I Claudius” and “Brideshead Revisited,”and Mystery’s Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, and Sherlock Holmes as well. Except for Sesame Street, the PBS News Hour, Mystery and Masterpiece Theater, now ...

Senate bill wrongheaded

Disdain for alternative energy sources, especially solar energy, is a widely held mindset among conservative politicians. These politicians offer baseless false narratives about solar and wind power generation that media outlets find difficult to effectively counter. Alternative energy, particularly renewables such as solar and wind, are increasingly competitive with traditional fossil fuels. This is why conservative politicians relentlessly malign alternative energy. It should come as no surprise that politicians who vote to maintain the fossil fuel status quo receive significant ...
