Golf tip of the week: Proper shaft lean at address
PHOTO PROVIDED In most cases, the butt of the club should point no more than one to two inches ahead of your belt buckle, more to the center is best.
More golfers than not, have too much shaft lean at the address position. Leaning the shaft toward the target actually can cause a slice and a low trajectory.
Each golf club has a specific loft angle, shaft lean decreases the manufactures recommended loft.
For example, if you are hitting a 48-degree pitching wedge and lean the shaft toward the target, you may be hitting a six or five iron loft.
The other problem with an exaggerated shaft lean is the club gets ahead of the body on the backswing and can’t catch up on the downswing, creating a slice.
Certain conditions warrant shaft lean. For instance, if you want to knock the ball down due to the wind or to keep the ball flight low enough to clear a low hanging tree branch.
