Central Mountain wins team title at King of the Mountain; locals have success on podium

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Muncy's Gage Swank competes in the fifth-place championship match at 114 pounds at Central Mountain's King of the Mountain tournament on Saturday.

Yet another example of elite wrestling was on display at this year’s King of the Mountain tournament at Central Mountain on Saturday afternoon, showcasing some of the area’s top wrestlers on the mats.

A major key for the tournament was how Central Mountain would fare against the other 32 teams competing. It resulted with the Wildcats simply outworking everyone else and climbing the mountain to take the team title at their event.

The dream became a reality for CM as they had guys medaling at almost all the weight class trophy presentations.

“Team wise coming home with the team title is always a great thing and with that being said I love my teammates and bringing home the team title while hosting our home tournament was a great thing,” Central Mountain’s Griffin Walizer said. “I think I can improve on pushing the pace and getting to my attacks like in my first match today and just improve on building on to that and to just keep getting better everyday. That’s why were in the practice room and always adding the fundamentals on top of that by adding to my skillset and getting ready for Powerade. I’m ready to go for sure.”

The area had numerous wrestlers medal seventh or better.

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Williamsport's Cael Nasdeo wrestles BEA's Lucas Fye during their championship match at 121 pounds at Saturday's King of the Mountain Tournament on Saturday.

In the first-place championships, Williamsport’s Cael Nasdeo (121 pounds), Central Mountain’s Luke Simcox (133), Central Mountain’s Griffin Walizer (145), Warrior Run’s Cameron Milheim (152) and Muncy’s Austin Johnson (215) all took first-place titles. Central Mountain’s Dalton Perry (139) finished second.

Muncy’s Scott Johnson (133) and Warrior Run’s Kaden Milheim (145) were third-place finishers and Warrior Run’s Reagan Milheim (139) took fourth.

Central Mountain’s Gino Serafini (160) was a fifth-place finisher and Muncy’s Gage Swank (114) took sixth.

Williamsport’s Collin Nasdeo (107), Central Mountain’s Jacob Weaver (172) and Central Mountain’s Rocco Serafini (189) were all seventh-place medalists and Central Mountain’s Braylen Corter (152) finished eight.

At 121, Nasdeo wrestled well throughout the bracket. He pinned Philipsburg, New Jersey’s Gavin Geleta in the secound round in 60 seconds and followed that up with a 66-second pin over Brookville’s Jared Popson in the quarterfinals. In the championship semifinals, it was more quick work from Nasdeo, this time by pinning Canon McMillan’s Brandon Dami in just 33 seconds.

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent At 139 pounds, Central Mountain's Dalton Perry takes down State College's Pierson Manville during their championship match at Saturday's King of the Mountain tournament.

Nasdeo capped off the tournament with a convincing technical fall win in the final, 18-2, 4:52 against Bald Eagle Area’s Lucas Fye.

Collin Nasdeo fell in the quarterfinals at 107 and worked his way through the consolation bracket to reach the medal round. Once in the consolation bracket, he picked up a pinfall in 41 seconds over State College’s Mason Sanderson before dropping into the seventh-place match. That’s where he defeated Philipsburg, New Jersey’s Massimo Gonzalez via medical forfeit for a medal.

One of the best and most memorable matches on the night was Rocco Serafini’s final as he gutted one out and found a way to win when your best stuff isn’t working. Serafini used his speed and leverage to gain the upperhand.

But in his last match he was in a dog fight with a guy of similar stature in Strath Haven’s Sam Millgan as they went back and forth, seesawing for positioning.

Serafini managed to shoot for an outside leg and did an alligator roll. With the match at 2-2 late in the third set, Serafini went down again for the second time holding his left knee. Serafini toughed it out, however, and secured the win with a 3-2 decision.

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Warrior Run's Cameron Milheim has his hand raised after defeating Central York's Carter Davis to win the title at 152 pounds during Saturday's KIng of the Mountain Tournament.

The other wrestlers who helped Central Mountain gain that top spot were Walizer, Simcox and Perry. Walizer won first place at 145 and is rated as the seventh-ranked wrestler in the state. He came in as the number two seed and will continue his academics and athletic career at Lock Haven .

“I thought I wrestled pretty well today. There were just a few things like in my semi finals match were I wanted to push the pace more and looked to score a little bit more and was a little hesitant at times, but I was happy with how I came around and started to push the pace a little more,” Walizer said. “I know I’m going out there and dominate and stuff like that that will help me proceed into the Powerade and do some big things there.”

For Walizer, he enjoys being a leader on and off the mat for his teammates.

“I try to just be a leader for them, lead by example and let my examples show what I want them to do and be a leader for them to go out there and do the same thing on the mat,” Walizer said. “Just being that supportive guy right back to them knowing they can do the same things if they put their mind to it and put their heart to it, believe in themselves and go out there and dominate. So I try and be a big supporter for every guy on the team.”

Simcox, who’s ranked No. 2 at 133 in Pennsylvania, won the top spot at his weight after defeating Hayden Cunningham of State College in the first-place championship match via decision, 6-1.

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Muncy's Scott Johnson has his hand raised after winning the 215 pound title at Saturday's King of the Mountain tournament against Greater Latrobe's Corey Boerio.

“Pretty much what was going through my mind was to come here and wrestle some good matches,” Simcox said. “The weight cut was a little hard, but now that we got the two pounds for this tournament it was definitely a lot easier.”

“I was definitely in a better mental state coming in here to this tournament, so I knew I was going to be dominant it was just the first match after the weight cut it was a little hard to get going right away,” Simcox added. “I was feeling a little sluggish, but towards the end of the day I started to feel good. I felt fast and my gas tank was there the whole match and I felt dominant.”

Simcox noted that he was proud with how he wrestled overall, and noted there is still room for improvements on the mat.

“I definitely think there is some room for improvements to be made with every tournament and every match. You know if you’re not making improvements, then you’re not getting better and with every match you can see improvements,” Simcox said. “With the Powerade coming up, the goal is obviously to win the tournament but all you can do is just wrestle you’re best and as long as you’re in that mental game, then I think that’s the best you can do.”

The Powerade tournament in Canon McMillan runs Wednesday, Dec. 28 through Friday, Dec. 30 and will feature standout wrestlers from not only Central Mountain, but Muncy, Williamsport and Montoursville as well.

Muncy’s big three wrestlers of Austin Johnson, Scott Johnson and Gage Swank — who did very well at the Top Hat — continued on that trajectory with a solid match and podium finish with first-place titles for Austin Johnson, who went 8-0 at 215, and a third-place finish for Scott Johnson. Austin Johnson won with a 13-5 major decision win over senior Corey Boerio of Greensburg. Scott Johnson won via technical fall over GaryLane Black of Cumberland Valley in 4:06.

Swank, who was seeded fifth at 114, reached the podium and took sixth at the King of the Mountain.

“Yeah I really didn’t think I did the best today. I could have done better. The best part of the day was just getting a couple moves in that I liked,” Swank mentioned.

As to what areas Swank wants to improve upon?

“Definitely bottom and just having better movement on my feet and setting up into my shots,” Swank said. “I’m looking forward to overall improvement, better matches this tournament. The team didn’t look the best, there were a couple of upsets that I really didn’t like, but overall I think we’re still going to do pretty good this year and hope they keep on improving.”
