Roundup: Hughesville baseball throws four-hitter in win over Knights

Griffin Vollman threw 4 1/3 innings of shutout baseball and struck out seven as Williamsport opened its season strong, blanking Shamokin, 11-0 in five innings. The Millionaires scored multiple runs in all four at-bats and produced nine hits. Cayden Robertson and Quentin Mazzante had big days with Robertson going 2 for 3 with four RBIs and two runs. Mazzante was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and Kellen Jackson 2 for 3 with two runs. Vollman helped his cause with a double and three RBIs. The Millionaires play again Wednesday afternoon at Jersey Shore.

Jed Webb, Austin Gray and Carter Cowburn combined on a four-hitter and Hughesville erased a one-run, fourth inning deficit as it defeated Lake Lehman, 6-4. Webb earned his second win and Cowburn the save. Those three pitchers have allowed just six hits in 16 innings thus far. Coen Riegner and Eli Olshefskie sparked Hughesville (2-0) offensively and each had two hits and two RBIs. Angelo Ferrigno provided a boost as well, hitting an RBI double.

Blake Hamblin and Marek Mascho both erupted against Williamson and helped Wellsboro improve to 2-0 by downing Williamson, 17-7 in five innings. Hamblin went 3 for 3 with a double, six RBIs and three runs, while Mascho was 3 for 3 with three RBIs and three steals. Winning pitcher Caden Smith was 2 for 3 as was Conner Adams and those two combined for four runs. Cam Brought struck out three in two scoreless innings of relief.

Danville scored five fifth inning runs to break open a close game and defeat Muncy, 12-3. Noah Confer went 2 for 3 for Muncy and Braydon Kamerer was 1 for 2 with two walks and an RBI. Mason Raup, Carter Raup and Cole Duffy all had two hits for Danville.

• Nolah Moyer was dominant in her first start of the year, throwing a five-inning no-hitter and striking out 15 as Muncy blanked Southern Columbia, 10-0. Moyer also went 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Casey Fry sparked an 11-hit offense by going 3 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs. Izzy Gush was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs, while catcher Kalynn Rice also had two hits. The Indians broke things open in the third inning when they scored eight times.

Defending Class A state champion Montgomery hit well in its season opener, routing Sugar Valley, 18-2 in four innings. Sloan Wooten homered and Addi Cross had a huge game. The first-time starter went 4 for 4 with two triples and a double as Montgomery won its 41st straight Mid-Penn game.

Abby Evans went 4 for 4 with three RBIs and helped power Warrior Run past rival Milton, 12-10. Lakesha Hauck had a big day as well, going 3 for 5 with a triple, four RBIs and three runs as Warrior Run pounded out 12 hits and scored runs in all but two innings. Maura Woland added a hit and two RBIs as the Defenders evened their record at 1-1.

McKenzi Tice was a force in her opener, throwing a no-hitter and going 4 for 4 while helping North Penn-Liberty blank defending NTL-II champion Northeast Bradford, 9-0. Tice struck out 12, hit a double, drove in two runs and scored twice. Freshman Haley Litzelman was 2 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs in her first high school game, while catcher Saige Lehman went 2 for 3 with a double, RBI and three runs.

• Williamsport blanked Milton, 5-0, in boys tennis on Tuesday afternoon. All three of Williamsport’s singles players recorded 6-0, 6-0 victories. Shreshth Singh (No. 1), Evan Beiter (No. 2) and Owen Kaar (No. 3) swept the doubles competition for the Millionaires with straight-set victories.

In doubles competition, Ben Manetta and Sam Radulski won at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-2, and Williamsport’s team of Jack Compton and Spencer Shoemaker had a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win at No. 2 doubles.

• Junior Rachel DeWolfe hit a walk-off homer in game one and freshman Claire Alexander, a South Williamsport graduate, tied the Lycoming College softball record with two homers in game two to lead Lycoming to a MAC Freedom sweep of FDU-Florham, 2-1 and 7-0.

The Warriors improved to 10-4 overall and 4-0 in the MAC Freedom, as they are the only undefeated team left in the conference. The 10 wins already surpasses the team’s 2022 total and the four wins to open conference play marks the team’s best start in league play since 2000, when the Warriors were members of the Freedom League.

The Warriors fell behind in the first game due to an unearned run in the third inning, but senior Morgan Wetzel, a Central Mountain graduate, tied the game with a long homer in the bottom of the fourth, her 99th career hit.

Sophomore Avery Eiswerth, a Williamsport graduate, (3-0) came on in relief in the fifth inning and got out of a bases loaded, one-out jam without allowing a run. She allowed two hits in the next two innings, but kept the Devils (7-6 overall, 0-4 MAC Freedom) from reaching third base.
