Local roundup: Safety squeeze propels Montoursville baseball past Mifflinburg

A safety squeeze propelled Montoursville in a thrilling win against Mifflinburg, 4-3. Cael Frame laid down a bunt down the first-base line, allowing Cole Johnson to slide under the tag at home for the win.

The Warriors scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh after trailing by two entering the final inning. Quinn Ranck led Montoursville with a 2 for 4 performance with two RBIs. Grayson Rinker was 1 for 1 with a run scored and reached once with a walk and once with a hit-by-pitch.

Neumann defeated Bucktail in five innings, 12-2, thanks to scoring at least two runs in all but one inning. Aidan Vogt threw all five innings, striking out seven. Chase Wright went 3 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Golden Knights.

Kaden Rodarmel homered, doubled and drove in two runs, helping Loyalsock boost its playoff hopes with an 8-4 win against Warrior Run. Deryk Kulp and Alec Kulp both had two hits and Deryk hit a double. Loyalsock scored in each of the first five innings and pitchers Nick Laubach, Gavin Rice and Deryk Kulp never let Warrior Run score more than one run in an inning. Cohen Zechman and Mason Sheesley both had two hits for Warrior Run.

Hudson Ward went 2 for 3, but Troy rallied from a one-run fifth inning deficit and defeated Canton, 11-2. Holden Ward struck out six in five innings for Canton (7-6).

Alex Davis, Derek Litzelman, Cooper Shaw and Cade Kurzejewski all had two hits for North Penn-Mansfield in its 12-6 loss at Sayre. Karson Dominick and Kohen Lehman both had hits and two RBIs, but Sayre scored seven runs in the fifth inning to erase a two-run deficit.

• Jersey Shore and Williamsport softball played yet another thriller in a rivalry defined by them. For the third straight time, the winner on a walk-off and this time it was Jersey Shore as Danielle Miller tripled and scored on a throwing error as the Bulldogs prevailed, 2-1. Miller, a freshman, also doubled and fellow freshman Lynna Clark threw a brilliant two-hitter against one of the district’s top offenses. Isabelle Engel was 2 for 3 and her first inning single put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0 before Aubri Blair (2 for 3) doubled and scored for Williamsport in the fourth inning. Jocelyn McCracken, Jaymison Stellfox and Grace Lorson all had hits for Jersey Shore as it avenged a walk-off loss at Elm Park from earlier this season. The victory gave Central Mountain sole possession of first place in the HAC-I, a game ahead of Williamsport (8-2, 6-2).

Bella Mileto made a run at the cycle, going 3 for 4 with a home run, triple and three RBIs, leading the way as Loyalsock defeated Hughesville, 12-3. Mileto also scored three runs and Marissa Helmrich struck out 12 as Loyalsock (11-3, 8-0) remained undefeated in the HAC-III. Anna Luxenberger also had a big day, going 3 for 3 with a double. Ditto Ava Damiano who was 3 for 4 with a double. BrookeLynn Walters went 2 for 3 for Hughesville (6-7), hitting a double and driving in a run.

Mahlon Yonkin threw a six-hitter and Natalie Bennett went 2 for 4 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs as Montoursville defeated Mifflinburg, 7-2. The Warriors 9-5 won their third straight and moved within a game of first in the HAC-II with Hannah Klotz and Avery Stahl both delivering two hits. Brianna Trueman added a double and the defense played flawless, making no errors in 18 attempts. Nevaeh Montoya added a hit and two RBIs.

Taylor Shannon homered and Alaina Brelsford hit a triple as Muncy stayed unbeaten in the Mid-Penn and defeated Sullivan County, 12-2 in five innings. Shannon and Brelsford both had two hits as did Chevelle Bauman and Shannonás home run was her third this season. Nolah Moyer allowed her first hit in 22 1/3 innings but that was it in four scoreless innings with nine strikeouts. Kaylyn Rice was 1 for 1 with two RBIs and Casey Fry also drove in two runs, helping Muncy (12-1, 9-0) win its sixth straight game. Kayla Fowler doubled for Sullivan (5-5).

Maura Woland and McKenna Forman each hit RBI singles for Warrior Run in its 7-3 loss against Midd-West.

Central Mountain beat Shikellamy, 8-1. It was the Wildcats’ seventh consecutive road trip. Central Mountain took a lead in the top of the first when Madisyn Wian drove a single to right, followed by a home run by Madison Hardy for a 2-0 lead.

The Wildcats proceeded to add two more runs in the second inning when Taylor Wahlers reached on a fielder’s choice and Katelyn Bowman hit a single to put runners on first and second. Wian then drove in both runs with an RBI single.

Addie McKeague pitched another gem for Central Mountain, striking out 12 of the 25 batters she faced in seven inings, allowing just one run on three hits. Offensively, the Wildcats collected 11 hits.

• In boys tennis, Central Mountain swept Williamsport, 5-0. David Lindsay earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Shreshth Singh, 6-0, 6-0, and Asher Talbot won at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-3 against Evan Beiter.

In doubles competition, Central mountain’s Nate Brinker and Joe Caimi had a three-set win, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 against Williamsport’s Jack Compton and Sam Radulski.

Wellsboro defeated South Williamsport, 3-2, to drop the Mounties to 3-9. Peyton McClure won at No. 1 singles for the Green Hornets, 6-1, 7-6 (4). South’s Wyatt Robbins won at No. 2 singles after falling in the first set to win in three, 0-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Loyalsock beat Bloomsburg, 4-1, thanks to winning two singles matches and picking up a No. 3 win via forfeit. Jett Pulizzi beat Jake Crane at No. 1 singles in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, and Logan Hammond earned a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles.

A day after beating Muncy, 3-2, Jersey Shore defeated Milton, 4-1. Eli Bower beat Milton’s Hagen Hanslman-Reigel, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles and Matt Fravel won 6-2, 6-3 for the Bulldogs at No. 2 singles.

Montoursville beat Danville, 3-2, a day after falling to Central Columbia, 5-0. Wyatt Fry won at No. 2 singles for the Warriors, 6-0, 7-5 against Nicholas Petrick, and Montoursville’s Rain Snyder had a three-set win at No. 3 singles over Stefon Petrick, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. The Warriors are now 12-5.

Muncy defeated North Penn-Liberty, 4-1, to drop the Mounties to 2-10. Rowan Revata won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Michael Howard won for the Indians at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-1.

Liberty’s win came at No. 1 singles where Daniel harman beat Zach Slamka, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

• Penn College split a United East baseball doubleheader at Penn State Berks, losing the first game, 3-0, and winning the second 15-4.

In the opener, Berks used three doubles and a single to score all of its runs in the fifth inning against Wildcats’ starting pitcher Justin Porter (2-3), while Berks’ Josh Miller held Penn College to five hits, walking none and striking out nine over seven innings.

Cameron Dick went 2 for 4 at the plate to lead the Wildcats in the first game with a double in the fourth inning and Shane Price had a double in the seventh.

Freshman Gehrig Blanchard laid down a perfect bunt single to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth for the Lycoming College baseball team, but Lukas Khandangle got a groundball double play end the game for Albright College, as it posted a 7-5 non-conference win.

Freshman Josh Bottger walked to start the ninth before freshman Nick Reeder, a Montoursville graduate, was hit by a pitch to set up Blanchard, who bunted down the first base line, loading the bases and putting the tying run at second base, but a strikeout and double play ended the game.

Down 7-2 heading into the eighth, the Warriors (12-23 overall) rallied as Reeder became the first Warrior in school history to record 40 hits in a season, reaching on an infield single before Blanchard was hit by a pitch and sophomore Jake Schilling singled into left field. Junior Joey Trout singled into center field to score one run, a sac fly scored Blanchard and a single by freshman Ben Glad into center scored Schilling to make it 7-5.

Down 5-0, the Warriors worked back into the game with single runs in the third and fourth innings. A pair of walks, a single by Reeder and a bases loaded walk by Blanchard got the first run of the game across in the third. In the fourth, freshman Zachary Pleska tripled to left center to lead off and scored on a sac fly from Glad.

Reeder finished 3-for-4 with a run, Pleska was 2-for-4 with a run and a triple and Glad was 1-for-2 with a run and two RBI for the Warriors.

Mansfield lost to Bloomsburg, 10-3. Bloomsburg opened the contest with three runs in the bottom of the first, before tacking on one in the fourth and six over the sixth and seventh inning en route to victory in the series’ opener.

The Mounties scattered their three runs with solo scores in the fifth, seventh, and eighth inning. Zach Spray homered in the seventh inning highlighted the Mounties on offense.

• In a showdown of the top two teams in the United East Conference the Wildcats swept Penn State Berks by the scores of 9-2 and 3-1. The Wildcats record moves to 26-8 overall and 18`-4 in the United East. Berks drops to 23-7 and 18-4 in conference play.

A first-inning RBI groundout by Lexi Snyder got the Wildcats on the board 1-0 in the first game. The Wildcats padded their lead with a four run third inning, thanks to an RBI single by Jordan Specht, a two-run single by Ivvy Morder and an RBI double by MacKenzie Weaver.

Specht continued to impress from the plate in the bottom of the fourth when she crushed a three-run homer to right center to extend the Wildcats lead to 8-0 after five-innings of play. Berks plated two runs in the top of the fifth on a two-run homer to close the deficit to 8-2. Penn College added one additional insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on a Morder RBI single to left center.

In a battle of aces in the circle MacKenzie Weaver (14-4) picked up the win allowing two runs (one earned) and four hits. Weaver fanned three and walked just one.

Maddie Hurst, Margaret Mangene, Morder and Specht all had two hits in the game. Specht finished with four RBI’s while Morder added three.
