Amidst a cloudy Saturday afternoon on its own home turf, Williamsport’s promising class of underclassmen prospered, taking first at the PHAC North Freshman/Sophomore meet with 241 team points. Of its combined 11 titles on the day, seven came through distance and jumps.

It was an outstanding overall day for its distance room, which combined for 71 team points and ran the table title wise.

To kick things off, it not only took first in the 4×800 relay, but also set a season best for the entire team with a 10:08.21. Though they fell behind Hughesville early, led by a strong distance runner in sophomore Vivian Draper, they kept up initially before quickly turning the tide.

“That was definitely a team PR for us,” said freshman Isabelle Sanders on the relay and distance room. “They’re just incredible.”

Sanders saw plenty of individual success on the day as well.

Sitting dangerously close to the program record in the 1600, she couldn’t quite PR there but showed consistency, gaining under three seconds amidst a rough day weather wise and ultimately, coming out on top. She’d follow it up with another first-place finish in the 800, where she ran a 2:27.20.

“I think it’s amazing,” said Sanders on her success this season. “I really thank God for the ability to run and just the joy and strength he gives me.”

Her sister, Madeline, would finish the clean sweep for the distance team, taking first in the 3200 with an 11:58.40 to go along with her silver in the 1600.

Clara Wade took third and fourth in the 1600 and 3200 respectively, accounting for 11 team points individually. Linah Van Emrik finished third in the 800 with a season best of 2:32.69. And Johanna Pelly placed sixth in both the 1600 and 3200, setting PRs in both with a 6:02.47 and 12:55.36.

“It’s so great to have so many people, especially underclassmen, that are so willing to work hard, push themselves and work as a team together,” said Isabelle Sanders on the distance squad. “We all kind of work together to make each other better, and I think that has a lot to do with (the success).”

The Millionaires didn’t quite run the table in jumps, but sophomore Isabelle Morrow helped them finish 3-for-4 there, earning titles in the high, long and triple jump with marks of 4-10, 15-1 and 33-9 ½ respectively. Though she didn’t quite PR, she had a jump over 16-feet that just barely scratched, which would’ve cleared her current PR by over half a foot.

“I was pretty happy,” said Morrow on her performance. “The weather wasn’t the greatest today, a little bit chilly and a little bit windy. But overall, pretty happy with how I performed today.”

Outside of distance and jumps, the success continued to pile up.

Sophomore Taitum Zarzyczny had a strong day in throws, claiming gold in shot put (32-3) and silver in discus (87-11). Fellow sophomore Dayanna Baines took first in javelin (101-3), as the Millionaires finished with top-two finishes in all three throwing events.

And for the second time this week, freshman Aubrey Phillips-Cobb ran both a sub-16 in the 100-meter hurdles and a sub-48 in the 300, posting a 15.84 in her title in the 100 and falling just short of a second in the 300 with a 47.74.

She’s steadily approaching the state-qualifying threshold in both events, needing to drop .15 seconds in the 100 and just over a second in the 300 to do so.

“It’s the final 100 that gets me, but I have a good start,” said Phillips-Cobb on her 300. “At first, I thought I was going to end up (at states) in a relay but I actually qualified for both of my personal events for districts. I feel really good about being able to make it to states.”

In terms of Class AA teams on both sides of the event, the Hughesville girls saw the most success, finishing second with a considerable 131 points and eight top-three finishes individually. Though they fell short in the 4×800 relay, the same four girls in Vivian Draper, Grace Fortin, Laura Ochs and Elizabeth Wolfe bounced back with a victory in the 4×400 to cap the meet.

Kylie and Katelyn Temple continued to prosper, with Kylie claiming two titles in the 200 (27.00) and 300-meter hurdles (47.07) and Katelyn placing first in the 400 (1:01.57) and third in the 100 (13.25).

“I felt pretty good with how I performed,” said Katelyn Temple following her 400 win. “It’s not the best weather but it’s not that bad.”

Freshmen Anna Easton and Hannah Laidacker saw success in jumps, with Easton taking third and fourth in the high and triple jump and Laidacker seeing the podium thrice, with third, sixth and eighth place finishes in the triple, long and high jump respectively. And the team finished with three top-two finishes in relays, rounding out their performances there with a second-place finish in the 4×100.

Jersey Shore took third, led by two top-three finishes from sophomore Alison Biblay and consistent podium appearances from fellow sophomores Nina Steppe and Josie Gerst.

Its throws squad triumphed, as Biblay earned a title in discus and bronze in shot put and Steppe took second in shot put, fourth in discus and fifth in javelin. And Gerst saw success in both sprints and hurdles, with third, fourth and seventh place finishes in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and 200.

“We set a lot of PRs for freshmen and sophomores, that was their main goal,” said Jersey Shore girls head coach Monica Richards on her team’s performance. “We’re doing great. Breaking PRs and cutting some time off of events they’re really passionate about. We’re really excited to see what happens at leagues and districts.”

Overall, it was a strong meet for the area’s underclassmen, one which provided potential indications for what’s to come within the next few years. Plenty of them will look to make an impact come postseason, set to kick off next weekend.
