Loyalsock juniors win Section 3 title, advance to states

After capturing the district title a week earlier, Loyalsock secured the Section championship last week, thumping Selinsgrove, 12-1, in six innings. Loyalsock won the best-of-three series, 2-1, and plays at Athens beginning on Wednesday morning in the state tournament.

Dyson Dupont threw a four-hitter and struck out seven, while Jackson Keefer went 2 for 2 with a double and four RBIs. Brecken Gusick produced quality at-bats and hit a single with three RBIs. Evan Lewis added a hit, single and RBI, while Dupont scored two runs and Brayden Cioffi scored three times.

Loyalsock plays Athens, the host, in the first round of the eight-team state field on Wednesday. Win or lose, Loyalsock is guaranteed a second game.

If Loyalsock loses, it drops into the elimination bracket and will play the loser of the Section 5 vs. Section 8 game at 9 a.m. If Loyalsock wins, it advances to the winners’ bracket semifinals and will play the winner of the Section 5 vs. Section 8 game on Thursday at 3 p.m.

The state championship game is scheduled for Monday, July 15, at noon. An if game, if necessary, is scheduled to be played 30 minutes afterwards.
