Golf tip of the week: Initiate the takeaway with the left shoulder
PHOTO PROVIDED Utilize the shoulder to start the backswing.
Taking the club back at the start of the swing is the most critical move in the golf swing. The club must stay in front of the chest while the upper torso coils like a spring against the lower body’s resistance.
Most, if not all, problems that develop in a golf swing are in the takeaway. If the club is fanned or moves first without utilizing the shoulders, the club will not return to the ball square at impact. This is what causes slices, shanks, and ground balls.
One of the best ways to start the backswing is to keep the left armpit and bicep marred to the ribcage while pushing the club back with the shoulder. Feel like you had a golf glove under the armpit on the takeaway.
A correct takeaway will help you to enjoy this great game called golf.
