Jersey Shore’s Olivia Spotts sets school record in javelin at Molly Dry Invitational
Jersey Shore’s Olivia Spotts surpassed 140 feet in the girls javelin at the Mansfield Molly Dry Invitational on Thursday in girls track and field competition and, in the process, made school history.
Spotts won the javelin wtih a throw fo 143-10 and set the Jersey Shore school record with her winning throw as well, breaking an 8-year-old Shore record by nearly 10 feet. Spotts won with a throw of more than 42 feet over Montgomery’s Alexis McKeta (101-6).
Spotts and Alison Bilbay finished 1-2 in the discus. Spotts, a senior, won the discus with a throw of 98-9 while Bilbay, a junior, was second with a throw of 96-2.
The Bulldogs had plenty of success overall. In the shot put, the Bulldogs finished 1-2-3 as Nina Steppe won with a throw of 32-3 followed by Shore’s Sienna Bowlan (29-11 3/4) and Bilbay (29-10 1/2).
Wellsboro’s Piper Hoprich, the defending District 4 champion in the 100 and 200, won both events on Thursday at Mansfield.
In the 100, Hoprich, a sophomore, ran a time of 12.44 to win by half a second. She then ran a time of 25.77 to win the 200 over Hughesville standout Kylie Temple by 0.09 seconds.
Jersey Shore freshman Aaralynn Kimble was a first-place finisher in the 400 with a time of 59.65, the only runner in the event to run a sub-minute time as Katelyn Temple of Hughesville took second in 1:00.79. Kimble was also a third-place finisher in the 200 in 26.76.
Jersey Shore senior Anna Sick won the 800 in 2:28.40 by roughly two seconds over Hughesville senior Alexis Kurzawa. Jersey Shore senior Peyton Dincher took third with a time of 2:31.21. Sadie Turnbow of Hughesville won the 100 hurdles in 16.67 while teammate Taylor Bunce was second in 16.72. Jersey Shore’ Josie Gerst ran a 17.45 for third and Montgomery’s Selah Persing ran a 17.46 for fourth.
Hughesville junior Kylie Temple won the 300 hurdles with a time of 45.25 and Persing took second (49.46).
Montgomery’ sophomore Mikaila Ganoe won the high jump with a height of 4-10. In the long jump, Wellsboro had the top 2 finishers as Annika Gehman won with a distance of 15-9 3/4 and Isla Twoey, a freshman, jumped 15-5. Montgomey’s Zoe Furman was third (15-2).
Gehman would be a two-event winner as she also claimed a victory in the triple jump by clearing 33-7, winning by nearly a foot over Furman (32-9 1/4).
In boys competition, Hughesville had a number of athletes take first in various events.
Hughesville senior Shea McCusker won the 3,200 with a time of 9:42.11, winning the event by nearly a minute as he was the only runner to break the 10-minute mark. Max Macias of Wellsboro took second in 10:35.38 while Tristan Kurzawa of Hughesville finished third (10:44.68).
Spencer Stine of Hughesville claimed a win in the 200 in 22.71, winning by 0.10 seconds. Jersey Shore’s Zack Kendall took third in the race in 23.09 and Carter Gormont of Hughesville was fourth (24.46). South Williamsport’s Eli White was fifth (24.75).
Hughesville’s Tyce Shaner was a two-event winner as he was a first-place finisher as he ran the 800 in 2:00.55, winning the race by just more than five seconds. Montgomery’s John Shrimp finished third (2:06.87). In the 2,000 steeplechase, Shaner won with a time of 6:21.15. Jonathan Carl of Wellsboro was a first-place finisher in the 400 in 52.08 as Haddon took second (53.77). Jordan of Shore was third in 54.38.
Keagan Smith of Hughesville won the pole vault by clearing 12 feet and in the discus, Hughesville’s Russell DeWire won with a throw of 130-0, beating South Williamsport’s Paxton Gephart on criteria.
Jersey Shore’s Elijah Jordan won the 100 with a time of 11.24. Gormont took fourth and Hughesville’s Sam Haddon was fifth.
Jersey Shore senior Zack Kendall was a two-event winner at Mansfield. He won the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.01 as he edged out Wellsboro’s Micah Vickery by 0.18 seconds. In the 300 hurdles, Kendall won with a time of 41.00, beating out Hughesville’s Kaviko Faulkner by just more than a second.
Wellsboro junior David Seeling took first in the high jump by clearing 5-10. Wellsboro’s Micaiah Fitch won the long jump with a distance of 19-6 3/4 while Hughesville’s Owen Wettlaufer took second (18-11).
South Williamsport had two of the top 3 finishers in the javelin competition. Jack Fortin of South Williamsport, a junior, took first with a throw of 154-9 and South Williamsport senior Dominick Snyder was third with a throw of 137-8. Hughesville’s Keagan Smith was in second (142-11).
Hughesville’s Russell DeWire took second in the shot put with a throw of 40-2, just nine inches behind Waverly, New York’s Troy Beeman.
