West End 13-16s start Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament 2-0
West End’s start at the Mid-Atlantic Regional 13-16-year-old all-star tournament was an odd one to say the least at Logue Field on Tuesday afternoon.
West End’s all-star team prepared to open the tournament against Charles County, Maryland, but the Maryland all-star squad only had eight players and had to forfeit the game against West End. But West End was able to get on the field later in the night and didn’t show any signs of rust.
West End defeated Prince George, Maryland, in the second game on Tuesday, 9-1, to improve to 2-0 at the Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament. With the win, West End will face Millville, New Jersey on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
The win on Tuesday boiled down to timely hits as West End out-hit Prince George, 11-2.
“We got a few timely hits when we needed, but we just couldn’t put that big inning together to score a bunch of runs,” West End manager Marc Hess said.
West End jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and led 5-0 after two innings. Prince George scored a run in the top of the third to cut the deficit to 5-1, but West End added three runs in the fifth to go ahead 8-1.
LJ Hill threw 5 1/3 innings on the mound and allowed just one hit with six strikeouts and two walks issued.
“LJ threw well and kept them off balance and then Jahvon (La Rosa) came in and threw well in his 1 2/3 innings,” Hess said. “Only giving up two hits and three walks in a seven-inning game is pretty good.”
Hill was one of West End’s top hitters as he went 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Trey Damschroder went 2 for 3 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored, Deshaun White went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Jaymes Carpenter had a triple with a 1 for 2 effort.
West End also saw Camden March go 1 for 1 with two RBIs and three runs scored, Jaxson March was 1 for 2 with a walk and Nate Crowe went 1 for 3 with a run scored.
“The kids were excited to play and after getting all warmed up to be told the game was going to be a forfeit, the kids got a little down because they just wanted to play baseball,” Hess said.
The Mid-Atlantic regional tournament’s semifinals are scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m. with the championship game set for 5 p.m.
