MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Correspondent South Williamsport (2-3) will look to get to .500 this week as the Mounties host Cowanesque Valley (2-3).
CV PPG–23.0, PPA–23.0; YPG–270.2, YPA–217.8
CV notes: CV (2-3) gave South a battle last year, leading by 10 in the fourth quarter before losing, 23-19. The Indians return a quality group of players from that team and have shutouts in both their victories. Junior linebacker Kegan Lane is a three-year starter who has more than 200 career tackles and who also ran for 143 yards and two touchdowns a week ago against Wellsboro. Luke Sottolano is a standout lineman on both sides of the ball and junior Dave Hess is a three-year starter on both sides. Hess has more than 1,000 career rushing yards and 500 receiving yards. He also is tied for second among area players with three interceptions this year. Hess has gone over 100 yards rushing in both CV wins. Quarterback Levi Stahli moved from tight end and completed 7 of 8 passes for 87 yards with a touchdown in the season opener against Towanda. Cam Stahli is having a good sophomore season and caught five passes for 71 yards against Muncy.
CV Player to watch–Stevie Olson: A sophomore two-way lineman, Olson put together a strong debut season a year ago and has kept improving. Olson averages 6.7 tackles per game and led CV with six sacks a year ago, as well as two fumble recoveries.
South PPG–25.2, PPA–25.6; YPG–315.2, YPA–279.4
South notes: South (2-3) played its best game this season a week ago, overpowering Wyalusing, 55-0. The Mounties imposed the mercy rule by halftime and controlled all facets, making crucial fourth downs stops and scoring at will. Cade Lusk ran for a career-high 182 yards and three touchdowns, moving to fourth among area rushers. Levi Butler caught 10 passes for 94 yards to take the area reception lead and sophomore quarterback Cole Gerber threw for 187 yards and four touchdowns. South has put together its most balanced offense of the last decade and freshman Garrett Lorson has helped both the running and passing games, totaling 120 yards and a touchdown last week. Sophomore running back Eli White returned for the first time since the season opener and ran for a touchdown. Caleb Johnson (18 yards per catch) continues helping stretch the defense and added a touchdown reception. Samir Moy intercepted a pass after recovering two fumbles earlier this season. Moy is tied for second on the team in tackles and Kasim Davenport had three sacks in a 31-14 win at Canton. The top eight teams in Class AA reach districts and South has moved up to No. 8 as it pursues a 14th straight playoff berth.
South Player to watch–Dominick Goode: Goode has added some muscle up front for South and is tied with Davenport for a team-high three tackles for loss. Goode helped South shut down Wyalusing’s running game last week and also has a fumble recovery.
Outlook: CV showed South last year that it cannot be underestimated. But it feels like South turned a corner last week and if this young team continues jelling it should even its record tonight.
