Jersey Shore at Williamsport preview

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Jersey Shore quarterback Nolan Pauling runs the ball on a keeper in the second quarter against Dallas. The Bulldogs (4-1) travel to Williamsport (4-1) for a Week 6 showdown.

Jersey Shore PPG–41.8, PPA–22.4; YPG–446.8, YPA–268.8

Jersey Shore notes: Jersey Shore (4-1) shook off a rough first half against Shikellamy last Friday and dominated the final two quarters, rolling up 527 yards in a 42-14 win. The defense allowed only one touchdown which came on a drive (the other was a 3-yard score following an errant punt snap) and held Shikellamy to one first-half first down. The defensive line often wreaked havoc, bottling up the run and forcing hurried passes. Defensive end Luke Thompson and defensive tackle Talyn Lope have combined for 17 tackles for loss, while end Conner Yingling has four sacks. Carson Watkins is tied for the area lead in in interceptions (4) after picking off two more last week. Linebackers Bo Sechrist and Kash Herritt lead the team in tackles and sophomore Carter Rhinehart has played well at cornerback while becoming a receiving threat as well. Fellow sophomore Nolen Pauling leads the area in passing yards and Watkins and Luke Ryan are among the area’s Top 10 in catches. Sechrist leads the area in rushing and both he and Herritt went over 100 yards against Shikellamy, combining for 344 yards and five touchdowns behind an offensive line which took the game over. Jersey Shore moved to second in the District 4 Class AAAA standings and would host a semifinal if it holds that position come late October.

Jersey Shore Player to watch–Mason Larson: The junior center is building off a breakout sophomore campaign and has helped Jersey Shore lead the area in both yards and points per game. Larson’s inside blocking against Shikellamy played a massive role in Jersey Shore breaking off a series of long runs up the middle.

Williamsport PPG–28.8, PPA–17.0; YPG–305.2, YPA–316.2

Williamsport notes: Williamsport (4-1) staged a furious comeback at Selinsgrove a week ago, scoring 20 straight points and winning, 29-23 after trailing by 11 with five minutes remaining. It was a gutsy win which helped the defending District 2-4 Class 6A champions maintain their first place in hold in the district standings. Sophomore quarterback Tevin Williams dazzled, accounting for four touchdowns, while running for 160 yards and throwing for 119. Williams also all but sealed victory when he returned a late interception 34 yards for a touchdown. Trey Damschroder caught five passes and Brayden Ungard kicked a 38-yard field goal. Running back Giovanni White gashed Hazleton for 201 yards and three touchdowns in a Week 2 win and has scored touchdowns as a runner, receiver and punt returner. Linebacker Lucas Naughton is one of the area’s best and is playing even better than a year ago when he easily surpassed 100 yards. The defense went seven quarters without allowing a point earlier this season, a stretch which bridged the second and fourth games. Damschroder has a pick-6 along with Williams and the defense has forced nine turnovers in four wins. The Millionaires did struggle against the run at Selinsgrove, but as they have done throughout the season, were able to make timely stops at crucial times.

Williamsport Player to watch–Davahjei Dymeck: The sophomore defensive end is one of several young players making big contributions in their first seasons starting. Dymeck flies around the field and made 12 tackles in a 42-0 win against Central Mountain. He also had a sack against Hazleton.

Outlook: This is another exciting area rivalry game this week and both teams showed their grit last week. Neither, however, wants to make a habit of slow starts. Look for both to come out energetic in what should be a fun environment.
