Sayre at Montgomery preview

DAVE KENNEDY/Sun-Gazette Parker Persing (7) and Briar Persing (22) of Montgomery celebrate their team’s win over Hughesville in Week 1.
Sayre PPG–4.0, PPA–41.0; YPG–118, YPA–302
Sayre notes: Injuries have already taken a significant toll on the Redskins (0-2) with running back Karter Green being lost for the season and quarterback Jayden Morningstar going down last week. Declan Barry moved from running back to quarterback in a 25-0 loss against North Penn-Mansfield and ran for 47 yards on 10 carries. Riley Johnson added 24 yards on 10 attempts. The revolving door at quarterback has made Sayre one dimensional and it has just one completion for no yards the first two weeks. Of course, the Redskins also opened the season against defending 2A state champion Troy which did not help matters. The defense showed bright spots against undefeated North Penn-Mansfield last week and allowed 266 yards.
Sayre Player to watch–Hudson Malanoski: The team’s leading rusher last week, Malanoski averaged nearly five yards per carry, gaining 47 yards on 10 carries. He also scored against Troy and was the team’s leading receiver a year ago when he caught 15 passes for 215 yards.
Montgomery PPG–10.5, PPA–15.0; YPG–224, YPA–203
Montgomery notes: Montgomery is at home for the first time this season, opening its NTL-II season. The Red Raiders (1-1) finished second last year and are trying to win their first league championship since 2000. A defense that led the area in yards allowed last season has been strong again with Trace Furman making 28 tackles. Lincoln Miller has three sacks to go with his 18 tackles, as well as two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Linebackers Logan Joy and Josh Knoebel both are averaging over seven tackles per game and Montgomery generated six sacks in its 14-6 season opening win at Hughesville. Quarterback Parker Persing ran for a career-high 95 yards in last week’s loss at Warrior Run and threw a touchdown to Gage Furman in the opener. Trace Furman ran for 72 yards on 10 carries a week ago and he, Persing and Knoebel all have more than 80 yards through two games. Montgomery turned its program around against Sayre last week, winning that Week 3 game and going 7-1 the rest of the regular season, while producing the first winning season since 2001.
Montgomery Player to watch–Cameron Woltz: The junior linebacker returned from injury last week and made eight tackles. Woltz led the team in tackles a year ago, going over 100 and making a career-high 20 in a win against Wyalusing.
Outlook: This feels like a game where Montgomery could bust loose offensively. If it does, the Red Raiders should win this one in convincing fashion.
