Football roundup: Loyalsock falls to Shamokin, Hughesville beats Wyalusing
Loyalsock was in for a tough test in Week 9 on the road at Shamokin and the undefeated Indians didn’t let Loyalsock score until the fourth quarter en route to an Indians’ 42-7 win to remain unbeaten.
Loyalsock’s score came when Nahmir Thomas caught a 44-yard reception from Danny Dowell with 9:56 to play to make it a 35-7 deficit. But Shamokin scored 55 seconds later to go up 42-7 when Barrett Walsh scored on a 47-yard run.
Loyalsock was held to just 135 yards of total offense, 70 of which came in the air. Shamokin out-gained Loyalsock, 434-135. Jalil Coates ran for 50 yards on 22 carries.
Shamokin saw Logan Steelr un for 123 on eight carries with a touchdown, Zakem Clinton have 112 rushing yards on 15 carries with a touchdown and Walsh had three carries for 72 yards and a score.
Shamokin scored at least one touchdown in each quarter and scored 28 through the second and third quarters.
HUGHESVILLE 28, WYALUSING 6
Connor Anstadt had a solid night as a wide receiver, catching six passes for 149 yards with three touchdowns to help Hughesville beat Wyalusing on the road, 28-6.
Anstadt caught a 67-yard touchdown in the first quarter just 13 seconds into the game to put the Spartans ahead, 6-0, before Avery Puderbaugh booted a 20-yard field goal for a 9-0 first-half lead in the second quarter.
Chase Shrawder had a 1-yard run in the third quarter to extend Hughesville’s lead to 16-0. Wyalusing would cut the deficit to 16-6 when Reuben Kinney threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Taylor with 4:11 in the third remaining.
Two minutes later, Stubbs connected wtih Anstadt again, for five yards, and extended the lead to 22-6. The Spartans’ duo of Stubbs and Anstadt had one last touchdown strike, this time for 24 yards, with 57 seconds to play to make it a 28-6 lead.
Stubbs ended his day going 6 for 19 for 149 and three touchdowns. On the ground, Shrawder ran for 79 on just eight carries and found the endzone and Jedidiah Abernatha had 17 carries for 61 yards.
WELLSBORO 55, NORTHWEST 8
Griffin Morral went over 1,000 passing yards for a second straight year and became Wellsboro’s only quarterback to ever do so in his freshman and sophomore seasons en route to the Green Hornets’ 43-point win.
Marek Mascho went over 1,000 all-purpose yards in Friday’s win (1,139) and Finn Matthews moved up to third all-time in both extra point attemps and makes in a single game as he was 7 for 8.
Wellsboro scored 27 points in the first quarter and added 28 in the second quarter to put the mercy rule into effect. The Green Hornets had 250 yards of offense to Northwest’s 149.
Marek Mascho had 66 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just three carries. Morral threw for 141 yards, going 5 for 8, and had two touchdown strikes.
WARRIOR RUN 56, CENTRAL 0
Warrior Run scored 28 points in the second quarter and put the mercy rule into effect in a lopsided 56-point win in Week 9.
In that second quarter, Tyler Ulrich had three touchdowns — one on the ground and two receiving scores — and Cohen Zechman had a second-quarter touchdown reception to put the game away. Zechman caught a 56-yard strike in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.
Denyn Beachel had 100 rushing yards and a touchdown on eight carries and Bryson Weigel had seven carries for 88 and a score. Zechman ended the game with 126 receiving yards on five catches for two touchdowns and Ulrich caught two passes for 72 and two touchdowns. Liam Moore also had a 14-yard touchdown reception.
Warrior Run accumulated 418 yards of total offense and limited the Blue Jays to just 109, 81 of which came in the air.
In the third quarter, Beachel had a 9-yard run and Moore caught his pass for a 49-0 lead. Warrior Run’s final score came when Weigel punched in a 4-yard strike with 8:12 to play.
TROY 70, CENTRAL MOUNTAIN 29
The Wildcats traveled to Troy to face the defending Class AA state champions and were in for a tough night as Troy won, 70-29.
The 29 points, however, is the most Central Mountain has scored in a game.
The Wildcats hung with the defending state champions early. Troy led 14-0 after two Mason Smith touchdown runs in the first quarter of 1 and 26 yards. Dalton McDermott had a 9-yard touchdown run for Central Mountain wtih 11:11 to play in the second quarter which cut the deficit to 14-7.
Troy responded with a Smith 42-yard touchdown pass from Reed Palmer before Central Mountain again scored, this time on a Kyle Everett 59-yard touchdown pass to Mason Masorti.
The score cut the deficit to 28-14 as the two teams exchanged scores once more before the half.
Troy’s Smith had an 11-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 35-14 with 6:11 to play. With its final second-quarter drive, Central Mountain got into field goal range as Mycah Carson kicked a 31-yarder to make it a 35-17 deficit at the half.
That would be the closest Central Mountain came to rallying in the game.
Troy scored back-to-back touchdowns in the thrid quarter as Smith found Reed Palmer for a 4-yard and 2-yard touchdown pass to make it a 49-17 lead. Central Mountain’s Gavin Heverly gave the Wildcats a slight spark with a 76-yard kickoff return to make it a 49-24 deficit.
Jayden Kutt punched in a score from a yard out with 1:06 to play to extend the lead for Troy to 56-24.
Smith would again find the endzone in the fourth quarter with an 11-yard run with 9:28 to play to go ahead, 63-24. The Wildcats scored their final touchdown when Everett found Mario Serafini for 8 yards and made it 63-29.
Mason Smith had his final touchdown on a 26-yard run with 5:46 to play before Kael Millard had a 15-yard run with 2:49 to play to end the game, 70-29.
Troy out-gained Central Mountain, 505-322, but the Wildcats had success both passing and rushing. McDermott had 97 rushing yards on 18 carries for a touchdown and Everett had 14 carries for 47 yards.
Evertt went 7 for 14 for 130 yards and had two touchdown strikes.
Mason Smith had a monster game for Troy, rushing it 19 times for 210 yards and five rushing touchdowns while Millard had 568 rushing yards and a touchdown and Jayden Kutt ran it 13 times for 80 yards and a score. In the air, Smith threw for 145 yards and three touchdowns on 6 for 8 passing.
ATHENS 41, MUNCY 14
A 20-point first half put Muncy in a hole it couldn’t claw out of as the Indians fell to Athens, 41-14. Connor Davidson had both first-quarter scores for the Wildcats, scoring from 3 and 2 yards out to take a 14-0 lead. In the second quarter, it was Connor Garrison who picked off Muncy and returned it 71 yards for a 20-0 lead.
Muncy’s first touchdown came as the Indians trailed 34-0. Carter Feigles picked off Athens and had a 76-yard touchdown run. Jaxson Thomas scored a 46-yard touchdown run with 4:45 to play in the game to give Muncy its second touchdown.
Muncy was held to just 68 passing yards and 71 rushing yards on 18 carries. Athens out-gained Muncy, 428-138. Andrew Walters went 7 for 20 for just 65 passing yards and on the ground, Jaxson Thomas had a team-high 44 rushing yards.
Athens was led by Davidson’s 70 rushing yards and three touchdowns and his 128 passing yards as he went 12 for 20. In addition, Shea Davidson threw for 157 yards, going 10 for 15 with a touchdown pass.
