Local roundup: Montoursville boys blank Wellsboro 2-0
CJ Lucas and Quinn Winslow formed a strong tandem Saturday, connecting twice for second half goals as Montoursville blanked Wellsboro, 2-0. Lucas assisted Winslow on both his goals, first in the 58th minute and late in the 79th. Mason Fry made five saves for Montoursville.
“I am very proud of the boys,” Wellsboro coach Todd Fitch said. “It wasn’t the result we wanted, but they were disciplined executing the game plan and had some opportunities against undefeated and state ranked Montoursville.”
Muncy also broke out in the second half after a scoreless first half, scoring twice and downing Montgomery, 2-0. Austin Hartzel broke the scoreless tie in the 48th minute and Landyn Burns followed up in the 74th. Bodie Moyer made three saves for the Indians.
Gabe Welshans scored off an assist by Ezra Paulhamus for a 1-0 lead, but Mike Mausteller’s penalty kick for Bloomsburg tied the game before the Panthers won in overtime thanks to a goal by Liam Fogg.
Loyalsock earned a 3-1 win against Shamokin. Aiden Wetzler scored in the 39th minute off a well-placed cross from Luke Edmonds for a one-goal lead heading into the half. After a slow start in the second, the Lancers found their rhythm with a goal in the 47th minute by Edmonds before Wetzler converted a PK in the 48th minute.
The win moves Loyalsock to 7-8-1 as the Lancers travel to Wellsboro on Tuesday.
• Ella Nagel scored twice and assisted on another goal as Muncy defeated rival Montgomery, 6-1. Kiki Woodward also scored twice and Emma McCormick added a goal and assist. Alexis McKeta also scored for the Indians (12-2-1). Addison Grimm scored for Montgomery.
MacKenzie Miller had two goals and Reese Temple added another in the first half to give Loyalsock a lead it wouldn’t relinquish en route to a 3-2 win against Wellsboro. Molly Savage and Lucy Ecker and Madison Perry all had assists for the Lancers.
In goal, Ava Deknecht played well with five saves.
“How you play the game says more than the final score. You can’t always control the outcome, but you can control how you compete,” Wellsboor coach Michael Reese said. “Our girls played hard and kept their composure, even when their character was tested. We maintained steady pressure and created chances right up until the final whistle.”
Luna Moyer and Haylie Smith scored Wellsboro’s goals.
North Penn-Mansfield edged out Meadowbrook Christian, 3-2, thanks to a hat trick from Brooke Wilcox. Mansfield led early in the 8th minute off a goal by Wilcox which was assisted by Brooklyn Ragan. Addison Wolfe for Meadowbrook tied the game in the 14th minute, but back-to-back goals by Wilcox in the 20th and 31st minutes put Mansfield back ahead for good.
Mansfield and Meadowbrook both recorded 17 shots on goal.
Milton cruised past Millersburg in a rout, 11-0. Olivia Heise had three goals and two assists to lead the Black Panthers’ offense. Sammy Roarty, Maeve Ficks, Avery Jones, Hayden Snyder, Kyleigh Ficks, Harper Gemberling, Gabby Gauger and Kat Bennage all scored a goal as well.
• North Penn-Mansfield’s James Knefley won the NTL Coaches Invitational, taking first in a time of 16 minutes, 31 seconds. Canton’s Lawrence Halbfoerster was just two seconds off the pace in second and Wellsboro’s Henry Whitney and Max Macias took third and fourth, respectively.
Wellsboro’s Lauren Kosek won the girls race in a time of 18:24. Sullivan County’s Zoey Reese took third in 20:34 and North Penn-Mansfield’s Jaci Fairchild fifth in 20:44.
• Montoursville earned a hard-fought 3-2 win against Danville in girls volleyball (25-20, 28-26, 12-25, 17-25, 15-13). Emma Ammerman had a team-high 28 digs for the Warriors, Laney Yonkin had 17 and both March Manotti and Sydney Clark had 11. Clark led Montoursville with eight kills while Dahlia Campbell had seven.
• In a battle of the top two teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division, the Lock Haven men’s soccer team tied host Gannon, 1-1.
With the tie, the Bald Eagles snapped a six-game losing streak against Gannon. Lock Haven moves to 6-4-2 overall with a 2-1-1 conference record. Lock Haven is just one point behind Gannon in the conference standings, while currently holding the head-to-head tiebreaker.
The Bald Eagles tied the game after a 52nd-minute goal from Kade Black, assisted by Carter Rosno. Black has scored five goals in the past two games.
• Four Lycoming players scored, helping the Warriors blank Moravian, 4-0 in women’s soccer. Norah Mosley, Abigail Umhoefer, Gabriella Rabinowitz and Mikayla Long all produced goals.
Lock Haven goalie Megan Miller did not allow a first half goal despite facing eight shots but Kutztown finally broke through in the second half and defeated the Bald Eagles, 2-0.
• Kamryn Skeith totaled 16 kills and a career-high 24 assists as Lycoming defeated Goucher 3-1 in volleyball. Lycoming (12-9) took the final two sets, 25-17, 25-21 after winning the first set 25-20.
Lock Haven dropped a five-set match against West Chester despite having 63 kills to West Chester’s 58. Lola Coulter had 17 kills, while Gracelynn Wolzen added 15.
• Tayah Bauer scored with a little more than 10 minute remaining, helping Lycoming’s field hockey team break a tie and defeat Moravian for the first time ever, 2-1. Isabella Bobe had a strong game in goal with eight saves.
Bucknell continued its hot offensive play with a critical 4-0 conference win over Boston University. The Bison scored four goals for the third consecutive game as four different players tallied a score for the Orange & Blue. The blowout halted the streak of 13 straight games where the outcome between the two programs was a one-goal affair.
All four goals arrived in the second half after a first half that saw Boston outshoot Bucknell 10-0, but the Bison defense refused to yield to the persistent Terrier attack.
• Lock Haven’s men’s cross country team finished second out of 16 teams at the Highlander Invitational in Houghton, New York. Jakob Rager finished third out 213 runners in the 8,000-meter course in 24:49.9 and Brayden Fair was fifth in 24:54.7.
The Lock Haven women finished eighth. The Bald Eagles finished ahead of PSAC rivals Mansfield and Gannon. Kaydence Strange led the way and took ninth in 22:26.9.
Penn College posted a two-day 607 and finished first in a 10-team field in The Bear at Berkleigh Golf Club. Individually for the Wildcats, Gunner Redmond tied for second among 52 players, one stroke out of first.
After Friday’s first round 305, the Wildcats led second-place Albright “B” by four strokes. Individually, Brady Handy was fifth with an opening-round 74 on the par-72, 6,729-yard course and Redmond was tied for sixth with a 75. On Saturday, they trimmed three strokes off of Friday’s round to win by four.
Redmond closed with an even-par 72 and was one of four who finished at 147. Also for the Wildcats, Handy carded a 77 on Saturday for a 151 and tied for seventh, Chase Dillman shot 78-75-153 to tie for 11th, Brett Keenan shot 78-78-156 to tie for 16th and Logan Gawlinski shot 82-78-160 to tie for 25th.
• Penn College’s women’s tennis team posted its first win of the season, 4-3, in nonconference action at Kean University. Penn College is now 1-5 and Kean is 1-2.
The Wildcats won four of six singles matches. Posting wins were Lauren Peck at No. 2, 6-1, 6-1; Faith Murray at No. 3, 6-2, 6-2; Leah Vest at No. 4, 6-0, 6-1; and Kiera Wene at No. 5, 6-4, 6-3.
