Loyalsock, Montoursville play outstanding thriller in scoreless draw

It doesn’t seem to matter what sport they’re playing in, when Montoursville and Loyalsock meet up on a field or basketball court, it brings out the best in both teams and gives fans more than their moneys worth.

Add Monday’s game at Montoursville’s Memorial Stadium as the latest example of that great rivalry.

The two rivals put on a great soccer game on Monday night with the two teams drawing to a double overtime scoreless tie after 100 minutes of soccer.

“It’s interesting. I said to (Bryan) Pauling, there’s just something about that bridge. What a game”

And what a game it was.

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Montoursville's Colton Beadle (3) and Loyalsock's David Bjorkman (24) compete for control of the ball during a high school boys soccer game at Montoursville on Monday.

After a slow start where only one shot on goal was recorded in the first 40 minutes, the two teams dialed it up in the second half and both overtime periods with numerous near goals.

“These are always a battle. We know coming in every time no matter what record shows, no matter how the seasons have gone, both teams get up for it and it’s a battle,” Montoursville coach Bryan Pauling said. “This is another one of those. A 0-0 tie through double overtime is exciting to watch, but an unfortunate result ultimately.”

Loyalsock had an outstanding chance with 2:40 to play in the game when the Lancers’ Gabriel Deprenda had a running shot from outside the 18 and sent a curving ball toward the far-left post. If not for the superb diving efforts of Mason Fry, that goal may have slipped by and decided the game. Fry read it perfectly to keep it scoreless.

As time wound down in the second half, Montoursville had one last chance to put one in during regulation when Quinn Winslow was sent a pass inside the 18 and fired a hard shot toward the middle of the goal right to keeper Connor Lang, who came up with a catch to force overtime.

Both goalies were key to their teams not allowing a goal. Both Lang and Fry ended the game with six saves.

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Montoursville's Cullen Pauling (10) and Loyalsock's David Bjorkman (24) compete for control of the ball during a high school boys soccer game at Montoursville on Monday.

“He’s a senior captain and shows up when you need him,” Ertel said of Lang.

“For us, it’s been a key for sure. We talked about Mason Fry a couple times, just continuing to be aware, continuing to be a leader, continuing to talk back there,” Pauling said of his keeper. “He made a couple big saves to keep it as a 0-0 tie, so definitely a key piece of the tie for us tonight.”

Both teams had chances in the first and second overtime periods.

In the first overtime, Loyalsock’s Christian Scampone was just outside the 18 and had a good low shot, but Fry came up with a block with 3:42 left. With 1:45, Montoursville’s Colton Beadle took a shot from 20 yards out that he tried sending to the left upper 90, but got just a tad too much behind it and it hit off the football field goal uprights above the net.

Beadle again came up with a huge moment with two seconds left when he got the ball outside of the 6-yard box and almost put in a great goal off a bicycle kick, sending it just high over the goal.

In the second overtime period, it was more of the same with near goals and shots either saved or sent wide or high. Scampone tried scoring from 35 yards out off a direct kick with 6:40 to play in the second overtime period, sending it to his left, but it was blocked.

“Execution in the final third has been tough for us this season,” Ertel said. “We’re focusing on the positives. Just an outstanding battle. Whether one goes in the back of the net or not, it was a great battle by both teams.”

Both teams ended the game with six shots on goal, all but one of which came in either the second half or overtime.

“I think we had a lot of opportunities. I felt we had a good game plan for it, we felt we were ready to go when we got here, just a few that didn’t go in. They had a slightly different defense, so we didn’t have the same strategy for getting the ball through,” Pauling said. “We need to use width more, which is always a little bit more of a struggle for us, but by continuing to go up the middle, they had someone on it all the time to knock it out of there. They have a very good keeper as well who comes out and essentially is a full player for them. It’s a tough game when you have a solid keeper like they do.”

Both Montoursville and Loyalsock’s defense did well limiting the opposing forwards and midfielders. Rarely did either team get a good chance inside of the 18. Beadle’s bicycle kick as time expired in the first overtime period was the only shot from inside the 18 in either overtime period.

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Loyalsock's Ethan Wetzler (22) goes after the ball during a high school boys soccer game against Montoursville at Montoursville on Monday.

Montoursville entered Monday’s game knowing that Luke Edmonds was a player they had to focus on. The Lancer could make plays and score, and the defensive game plan was to try to limit his opportunities from the beginning of the game.

“We needed to make sure we always held the middle, they’re very strong. We knew No. 8, Luke (Edmonds), is somebody you can’t ever let your eyes off at any time in the game,” Pauling said. “Continue to try to use width, continue to keep an eye on No. 8. He got a lot of good shots in there. I think we stayed on the game plan very well except we just didn’t get one to go in.”

And it was no surprise for Ertel that the Lancers had to slow down Quinn and Bryce Winslow, two brothers who lead the area in assists and goals, respectively. And the Lancers were able to do just that. The two brothers combined for just five of Montoursville’s 10 total shots — six on target.

“You work on it, great tactics. The guys are organized; they’ve been playing with great communication. It’s tough to stop those kids, you’ve seen them for years,” Ertel said. “They’re outstanding, they’re fast. But our boys, they held their own.”

The Lancers had six shots on goal, but fired a total of 11.

“It’s a rivalry, it’s a competition. They’re well coached, I love the staff and love the kids. It’s always a good, healthy battle,” Ertel said. “There’s something to say about the fact we have nothing to lose, that kind of helps, but it’s just that good old, natural rivalry.”
