Warriors look to rebound after rough game last week

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Lycoming players celebrate their victory over Moravian after a college football game at David Person Field on Saturday. Lycoming won 17-0.

Last week was a loss that Lycoming’s football team wants to soon forget and erase. After earning the first win of the year with a 17-0 shutout against Moravian two weeks ago, Lycoming had to travel to Susquehanna and suffered its worst loss of the season, 69-7, to the River Hawks.

A 35-point second-quarter did Lycoming in against Susquehanna and the Warriors weren’t able to recover. Lycoming was held to just 171 yards of total offense — 108 of which came by the passing game — while Susquehanna recorded 656.

Lycoming had struggled in games this year stopping and containing the run game and Saturday was more of the same as Susquehanna ran for 252 yards and threw for 404.

Joe Lyons went 10 for 25 for just 99 yards for Lycoming against a talented and tough Susquehanna defense and Lyons threw three interceptions. Terrence Oliver, one of the Landmark Conference’s top running backs, was held to 78 rushing yards on 13 carries.

While that loss stung, the Warriors are hoping to rebound this week as Lycoming travels to Western Connecticut State for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

Western Connecticut State is coming off a 69-0 road loss to University of New Haven, the first loss fo the season for the Wolves (4-1).

The Wolves have scored 38 or more points in three victories this year, all in a three-week span with Gettysburg College (55-21), Kean University (38-7) and Juniata College (69-15).

Lycoming knows defensively it will have to play solid to hold Western Connecticut State in check.

Dylan Jackson has gone 91 for 146 this season with 1,189 passing yards and 13 touchdown passes. He’s been able to spread the ball around as Markus Faucett (22 catches for 318, five TDs), Serge Lagadere (19 for 203), Thomas Schiavoni (12 for 197, TD), Tamarion LaFortune (seven for 152, three TDs) and John Fitzmaurice (eight for 123, TD) all have at least 120 receiving yards this year. In addition, Jayden Leroy has four receptions for 91 yards and three touchdowns as Jackson has plenty of weapons to spread the ball around.

Kamryn Holmes leads Western Connecticut State’s running game with 241 yards and five touchdowns. The Wolves have three running backs with at least 130 rushing yards, however none average more than 48 yards per game.

Lycoming’s Oliver is closing in on 1,000 rushing yards this year as he has 884 after the Susquehanna game. Oliver has been outstanding all year for the Warriors as he is averaging 147.3 yards per game and an impressive 6.6 per carry.
