BLOOMSBURG — Wellsboro’s Lauren Kosek has been having a strong season, and saw it get even stronger after she won the District 4 Class AA Girls cross country title on Thursday.
Kosek (17:59.3) pulled away from Lewisburg’s Baylee Espinosa (18:42.4) the second half of the race to break the tape at the end.
“The idea was to just stay as close as I could to Baylee and then basically see what happened,” said Kosek.
She was focusing on 100 meters at a time during the race, and was comfortable at the mile mark.
“I just did that for a mile, I can do it for another one,” said Kosek.

She used the flat middle portion of the race to make her move, and once she did she never looked back.
“I was a little surprised that I started closing the gap,” Kosek said. “Then everything kind of happened quickly.”
Also in the Class AA race North Penn-Mansfield’s Leila Garverick (20:34.1) and Jaci Fairchild (20:35.3) took 15th and 16th to punch their ticket to states.
In the Class A girls’ race Sullivan County won school’s first ever district title for women with 36 points. She edged out the defending district champions Warrior Run (48).
Zoey Reese (20:41) was second to lead the Griffins as Addisyn Templin (21:01.7) took fourth.

“It’s really amazing, especially coming off a team that was really small and nobody really thought of being this good,” Reese said.
Also in the class A race South Williamsport’s Kendall Smith (21:43.4) was seventh overall to claim the final state qualifying spot.
In the boys’ Class A race Montgomery’s John Shrimp (18:06) was fifth overall to punch his ticket to states.
“My mindset going in it was I have to be strategically smart about it, and conserve my energy,” said Shrimp. “I wanted to kick it a little sooner but I knew the way the wind was I had play a little smarter, and save it down to the last.”
