Lycoming loses a hard-fought battle, 1-0, in postseason in women’s soccer
A record-breaking season abruptly halted as the No. 2-seed Lycoming College women’s soccer team fell in a hard-fought 1-0 defeat to third-seeded Catholic University of America on Wednesday.
Catholic (11-6-3, 6-1-2) moves on to the Landmark Conference Championship finals on Saturday at No. 1-seed Scranton, while Lycoming finishes 17-2-1 with a school-record number of wins and the best winning percentage in school history.
Both teams had a handful of offensive opportunities during a blustery first half marked by steady drizzle and rain. Catholic fired off six shots, two of which hit the right post, while the Warriors fired six shots, five on goal, but none of them found the back of the net, and so the match stayed scoreless into halftime.
After the intermission, the rain abated and the Warriors came out firing with a pair of stunningly close changes. In the 50th minute, senior Norah Mosley redirected a ball that was deflected by Catholic keeper Ava Rieger off the crossbar. Just over two minutes later, senior Mikayla Long, a Lewisburg graduate, was found open on a cross near the left post, but the shot from point-blank range was just wide.
The Cardinals finally broke through in the 75th minute. Off a throw-in, Peyton Coron found Sam Cesario on the right side of the box, who got a shot into the corner netting.
The Warriors had one more last gasp in them in the 87th minute, as senior Abigail Umhoefer came free on the right side at close range, but her shot was denied, which wound up as Lycoming’s final shot of the night.
Rieger made eight saves in the win, while senior Riley Block made seven saves.
