Butler has monster night, helping South boys open season with win
Levi Butler put together a dazzling display in his first game this season, scoring a career-high 43 points as South Williamsport defeated Canton, 80-27 on the road Wednesday night. Butler scored 25 first quarter points and had 41 by the third quarter. He also hit seven of the team’s 10 3-pointers. It is the most points scored by a South player in the 2000s. Chance Quimby added 10 points with four assists, Neeko Bowen scored seven points and South built a 38-7 first quarter lead.
Jersey Shore also got off to a blistering start in its season opener Wednesday, scoring 36 first quarter points and 59 by halftime in a 75-34 win against CMVT. Khani McCray scored a career-high 16 points and added five assists and three steals. Carson Watkins scored 15 points and Ty McDermit 14 points with three steals. Nine Bulldogs scored and Tucker Hanna had eight points.
Jaxton Frantz erupted for a career-high 28 points, adding five rebounds, three assists and three steals while helping Muncy thump East Juniata, 65-36 in its season opener. Frantz also drained five 3-pointers. Dylan Mausteller scored 11 points, dealt four assists and made four steals. Dominic Guardini had 10 rebounds with five assists and all nine Indians scored.
Loyalsock fought back from a nine-point fourth quarter deficit but lost its season opener, 56-52 at Central Columbia in coach Ryan Cioffi’s debut. The Lancers scored 26 fourth quarter points and Braydon Cioffi scored a game-high 14 points. Jalil Coates scored eight of his 10 points in the fourth quarter and Saoj Jones and Isaac Blackwell each had nine points.
In girls’ basketball, Carrie King produced a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, but Northwest pulled away in the second half and defeated Milton, 40-27. Liz Shrock grabbed nine rebounds for the black Panthers in their season opener, while Lainey Snyder scored 10 points.
Bre Nixon scored seven points and Kallee Johnson six, but Benton built a 19-point fourth quarter lead and defeated St. John Neumann, 42-22. The Knights outscored Benton, 18-10 in the second half.
