Hughesville boys’ wrestling makes huge comeback against rival Muncy

Trailing 27-9 with just six matches to go, Hughesville wrestling put together a run for the ages, winning all six matches – four which were competitive – to defeat rival Muncy, 44-27, on the road Thursday night.

Brogan Sherwood kicked off that run with a 42-second fall against Muncy’s Chayce Scampone, and Kile Hartman (172), Colton Gavitt (189) and Jakob Charles (215) followed suit, posting two pins and a tech fall to round things out alongside two Muncy forfeits. Cameron (Finn) Styron made  it four pins for the Spartans  on the night, and Ethan  Wodrig  added a 10-4 decision against Kase Snyder at 139.

For Muncy, its lightweights once again shined, as Chris Cummins, Gannon Swank  and Roman Maiorana each posted tech falls to give the Indians a 15-0 lead out the gate. Gage Swank and Chase Boozer rounded out the team’s victories, winning by forfeit at 133 and 145.

Against Danville, South Williamsport didn’t suffer a single competitive loss, winning all five competitive matches and doing so with bonus points to rout the Ironmen, 63-6. The win improved the Mounties’ record to 6-1, with their only loss coming to Montgomery last week.

Jonah Caputo (139), Louis Mazzullo (145) and Elijah Harvey (285) notched pins for South, with Caputo and Harvey’s occurring in the first period and Mazzullo’s coming eight seconds into the second. Taylor Naugle secured the team’s first competitive win of the night with a third-period tech fall, and Jayden Hamm rounded out South’s wins with a 15-4 major decision over Danville’s Aiden George.

Evan McTish continued his big week, matching a career-high with 26 points and 14 rebounds as North Penn-Liberty’s boys’ basketball team defeated Cowanesque Valley, 61-45. McTish has 51 points and 22 rebounds in two games this week and the Mounties (7-5, 5-0 NTL-II) remained undefeated in league play. Luke Kreger scored 14 points, grabbed six rebounds and dealt four assists, while Conner Lewis just missed a double-double with nine points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Landon Mattern added nine points and six rebounds. Ashtyn Burdick scored 13 points for CV (4-9, 2-2) and Josh Teague 12.

Monte Whitehead scored a career-best 20 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter as Canton nearly won its first game before dropping a 36-35 heartbreaker against Sayre. Whitehead, a junior on a team mostly comprised of freshmen, helped Canton rally in the fourth after Sayre took a three-point lead into the final quarter. Freshman Kix Carr scored a career-high 10 points, four coming in the fourth quarter.
